Sodium Bicarbonate as a Lactic Acid Buffer?

Does anyone have any articles on the benefit of using baking soda as a lactic acid buffer, much like beta alanine does, to increase anaerobic performance?

Lactic acid does not directly create acidosis in the body, but it does lower the pH levels some in the body. I am starting to experiment more with ergogenic type supplements preworkout to increase performance.

Yeah I know how to use Google, but I was hoping that there would be some discussion of this in the supplement science section.

Lactate does not cause acidosis directly. When ATP is hydrolyzed it releases the H+ ion which causes the acidity. Lactate can be used as a fuel and a buffer.

A number of studies have tested and confirmed the benefits of sodium bicarbonate "loading" as an effective ergogenic aid for athletes competing in high-intensity sprint-type activities. In general, those events in which lactic acid accumulation is typically a limiting factor seem to respond well to bicarbonate loading. Athletes competing in running events from 400 ? 1500 meters, swimming events of 100-200 meters, track cycling 1-5 kilometers and rowing events (2000 meters) have all shown significant improvements in performance following pre-event loading with sodium bicarbonate.

BK posted recently about using it to improve his run times...

I will see if I can find it.

anyhow, sword, I think it is more for increasing aerobic performance.

It is an ergogenic aid, no?

Would acidosis occur more in aerobic activity than anaerobic?

    Appreciate the comments.

There is quite a bit of research with its use. It does however come with some unpleasant GI side effects.

if i remember correctly, Sodium Bicarbonate will also buffer stomach acids, making a high protein diet a nightmare, (stomach gas and cramping due to the fact there is not sufficient stomach acid to break protein down before it moves through the digestive tract), so supplement your Sodium Bicarbonate away from protein intake.
The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Yeah there might be safer ways to lower the pH level in your body than that.
