Writing chalks and climbing/lifting chalks are not the same things. Find an outdoor store that sells climbing gear and they'll have chalk, or order it online. It's cheap.
Writing chalk = Calcium Carbonate
Lifting chalk = Magnesium Carbonate

Don't think that would be a good idea.
While both are considered chalk, blackboard chalk contains calcium sulphate (similar mineral used to make drywall) while weightlifting chalk contains magnesium carbonate (the drying agent which removes perspiration). Not the same thing. Just order it online, it's not that expensive.

If it's not for competition and you're in a bind for time (or just don't want to pay for shipping right now) you can pick up rosin bags like I did. I went to a local sporting goods store and picked up two. It's cleaner than chalk and has a similar affect. I just keep them in a ziploc bag and take them to the gym on deadlift days.

To me chalk is chalk is chalk is chalk. When I started getting serious about PL, I went to Staples to get some blackboard chalk, worked just fine. Only problem is it's hard to make dust with it, so you have to scrape the outer layer off and then rub it on your hands. I now use the magnesium carbonate, which is good stuff too.

This is like giving your girlfriend a pebble and telling her it's a diamond. It's retarded. Chalk is not chalk is not chalk.
Get the real stuff.

So does a pebble in a ring, but it's not the same thing.
