anyone swim?

not sure if this is the right place to post this, but i was wondering what everyone thinks about swimming as a workout? i plan on swimming before class and the lift or do cardio after work or after classes. Has anyone had pretty good success with swimming? also should i just do laps or what would be a good workout without looking like a fat noob in the pool.

I swim 4/5 days a week. Two months ago I could barely do 200 yards at once, but now I'm up to 1000 with only a couple of short breaks. I swim at around 10/11am and then later in the afternoon at 4/5am I go lifting. I think swimming did help me increase my endurance a lot. However, sometimes I get somewhat tired and sleepy in the afternoon and can't do my best in the gym. But that could be just because I'm cutting and the calorie deficit I'm on right now. Don't worry about looking like a noob...everybody has to start somewhere. I sometimes even take the flippers if I feel that my form is not good enough or just because my legs are too sore...that's actually why I moved my legs workout to Friday, so they can rest over the weekend.

did you lose any weight or notice that you were more toned after the swims? i swam everyday a few summers ago and noticed i was looking a bit leaner but i was also staying with my grandma who didnt let me eat junk. does anyone think i should just up my cardio rather than swim?

As far as I understand swimming is one of the best forms of Cardio (calorie burning-wise) if you do it right - ie. Full movement of legs, proper strokes, etc. I love swimming too and one of the most extreme bouts of cardio I can recall is when I had to beat a time for a swim test.

Swimming is decent, I like it because it's fun.

But I do feel I get a better cardio workout jogging for the same amount of time.

I love swimming, but I don't have a pool where I live. When I was a kid me and my best friend used to swim every day for almost all day; we would do races to see who could swim around the pool the fastest. You could get a friend and have a sort of competition; that'd help you push yourself, which would help you lose weight.

I wake up at 6am and hit the community pool for lap swim.
I warm up first with 100 freestyle
then do the pyramid which is
50 100 200 100 50 keep going
for better explanation 50 is one lap (across and back)
breast stroke is good for your thigh muscles
and grab a kick board if ya need to strengthen your kicks.

Its a great workout I go on an empty stomach so I can burn fat
Try not to take too long of a break in between laps, so you can keep your heart rate up.
Start with 30 min non stop swim ,then eventually you should be able to swim for an hour and pace yourself.

It get you lean and tones up your pecks.
At first you'll get a bit tired afterwards, and eat more than usual because of how much calories your burning. But with time you're body should adjust.

I would suggest switching up your cardio workouts to get the best results.
Swim then Run/Jogg etc ...
Good luck! have fun

Thumbs up

Swimming is fantastic. If you want to do it, then do it.

I used to swim every lunch time for about 30-40mins, constant underwater lengths with a breather at each end.. I think it's probably the trimest I've been since I was 16.

I managed to get my underwater swimming speed up to the level of the pro front crawlers, and can do 2 lengths underwater in one breath after some preperation.

Unfortunately when I moved away, the pool nearest to me has a 3 metre deep end, and I feel panicked because I like to stand up in the deep end whilst i get my breath back.

Going swimming on Saturday when i go back to see my parents, can't wait!
