Is there a way to decrease the average amount of sleep needed?

I've always been the kind of guy who feels lazy and tired if I don't get around 10 (serious) hours of sleep, but I know people who act great after just 4 hours of sleep.

Is there some way I can condition myself to require less sleep to be energetic the next day?

I think you can feel more refreshed if you take sleep cycles into account. Most ppl say sleep in increments of 3 or 1.5 hours.

I read about a professor who decreased the amount of sleep he needed to 4-5 hours per night. I don't remember who he was or how he did it. Sorry.

a lot of people live fine off 5 hours a night. i personally feel the best after 6 hours.. unfortunately i love sleep, so even when i wake up and feel great after that amount of time, i tend to fall back asleep, then feel like **** when i wake up 2-3 hours later.
i literally have no interest in women. PM me for a date.

PS - i dont lift, and have flamingo legs.

This. It's all about sleep cycles and waking up at the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of it.

I would be one of those that only need 4. I have always been that way.

That said, you can try polyphasic sleep, but it usually conflicts with daily life.

I've heard numerous studies (too lazy to look them up SORRY) say that there is no possible way to live without proper sleep. People who think they are performing well with no sleep are simply not aware of their sub-par performance. I've heard studies say that if you get less than 7 hours of sleep per night, statistically you are reducing your life span.

    interesting responses.

A lot of people say that time is the most valuable resource a human has, but the average human shares the same amount of time.

I view energy as our most valuable resource because without it we are useless and energy levels vary from person to person.

    Food for thought I suppose.

even 7 would be great if I could feel fully energized from that, however I literally require double digit hours of sleep in order to feel my finest

read that too somewhere, while i was studying the polyphasic sleep. It has never been proven one way or the other. However, I have read multiple times that just like every person handles different situations, well, differently, the same goes for sleep. If I sleep and naturally wake up after say 4 hours, then there's nothing wrong with that.

yeah - this guy documents it here.

Like everyone said - tough to do and requires lots of personal discipline. My suggestions are trying to get "better" sleep. Go to bed earlier, rise earlier, eliminate stimulants like caffeine, quiet dark rooms etc.

I've read about polyphasic sleep and it seems ideal but my work / social life would never permit it

seriously I would consider the light therapy. Some days when I don't get enough sleep I feel like it gives me a small boost to get through the morning. If you are sleeping 9 hours and still having trouble it seems like you have a problem... that isn't normal. I'm one of the people who needs 8 hours to feel good, but if you aren't good on 8 then you might have sleep apnea or something that is hurting your sleep. Don't let it go unchecked... can cause health problems but more importantly you're probably always tired!

Like everyone said - tough to do and requires lots of personal discipline. My suggestions are trying to get "better" sleep. Go to bed earlier, rise earlier, eliminate stimulants like caffeine, quiet dark rooms etc.
    THIS!

This actually helped me tons. I started sleeping on a pitch black room, early dinner and no stimulants. Helped me tons.

I feel best after 5-6 hours of sleep. If it was a hard day I take a midday nap of ~20 minutes and then feel good for the rest of the day.

So perhaps try sleeping shorter and compensating by a really short nap in he afternoon.

    Try:

    1. Taking ZMA (Heard you get better quality sleep)

    2. Make sure your room is pitch dark (Or using sleeping mask/No Homo)

    3. Make sure there is no noise

    4. Turn off all machines (Phone, Computer, etc)
Im not afraid to die on a treadmill. I wont be outworked. I will run.Period.You may be more talented than me, you may be smarter than me and all those things, but if we get on the treadmill, your goin to get off first or Im goin to die. Its that simple. The commodity that I see in most people that arent getting to the places they want or arent achieving the things they want is strictly based on hustle, based on being outworked, strictly based on missing the right opportunities.

    Good thread.

I'm one of those people that dont seem to function well on anything under 10 hours. I litterally need 10 hours of sleep or i'm pretty much dead tired.

Then I have friends who sleep maybe 4 or 5 hours.. 6 hours.. and their absolutely energized and fine. So I'm not sure whats wrong with me, or why it's like this.

Are any of you guys who sleep low amount of hours, under 200lbs? Maybe higher body mass has to do with more sleep requirments to reenergize?

I actually got rid of my bed. You sleep better on a flat surface, with no pillow. Your posture will straighten out too.
