Are there any pro BJJ-only fighters?
Do the guys who go to the mundials in Brazil get paid?
I'm guessing that's the only way to make money without doing MMA?
Or is there another set of tournaments BJJ guys can earn cash for competing?

i think how you get paid off of bjj if thats all your interested in doing... winning tournaments give you the recognition, after you win you then have credentials, ppl will want you to train them ,schools might hire you or if you have the fan following & money involved you can start your own gym
dont think you can make much money off of jsut competing in jitz.... i might be wrong tho

They give away a bit of prize money at ADCC.
Don't think they do at the mundials.
Might get sponsored by Koral or something though, not that I really know what that would mean for you.
But I mean, win the mundials, move to America/Europe/Australia, start a school, 170 a month per student or just do seminars, 3 hours work and you'll be raking in over a grand.

Yeah, this sounds about right. At least, that looks to be the case with guys like Roger Gracie.

Alright thanks guys.
So it's pretty much:
Train
Get a black belt
Do well in a tournament
Teach
?
What's the prize money or what kind of money do you get paid for competing in the Mundials and other big tournaments?

Train Hard Or Go Home
My coach is a blue belt, he trains under a guy with a purple belt.
I dont think a black belt is a neccesity to teach. Blue belt its is like black belt judo though, very difficult to get even blue.
Local tournies in Scotland pay a couple hundred pounds to tournie winners, but their like quarter annual.

It's NOT like getting a black belt in Judo. Get your facts straight.
I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for mod reps, I can tell you I don't have them. But what I do have are a very particular set of reps; reps I have acquired over a very long misc career. Reps that make me a nice guy for people like you.If you rep me now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will neg you.

not saying that your purple belt isnt knowledgable, but its always good to have a black belt around. our gym theres 2 black belts who if theyre not around at the time then a purple belt and these experienced blue belts teach. but sometimes theyre unsure on questions people will ask, son they ask the black belts

Yeah, OP, as far as I know the only way to earn money strictly through competing is by winning prize money and getting sponsorships. Kind of a risky way to try and earn cash though, imo!

they just had the ADCC PRO cup..i think the winner of the open/black belt divisons all won money..like 7k..not bad for grappling. but most of the big time guys i think have 1 or more schools they run and they get money from that.

Making money from grappling is next to impossible, especially grappling with the gi on. No gi grappling has a tiny bit more money in it, but it still very little.
MMA is a much easier way to make money.

Abu Dahbi pays well 5 figures,
There was a comp in December in Jordan which was 10k a division black belt, braulio Estima took double gold therefore 20k
Theres the 10k challenge in the UK which Monson took
Asian Cup pays well i believe
There are tournys to make big money in for sure, but the main thing as said in this thread is just winning as you will gain more seminars, more students to your school, instructional dvd deals ect.
And to MVP:
What tournys are you speaking of in Scotland that pay a few hundread cause i nor my team sure as hell havnt heard of them! We'd definetly be entering!

I was lucky to talk with Robert Drysdale about this very topic.
He says that there is very very little money in gi grappling. A tiny bit more in no gi, but nothing compared to MMA.
