So a guy I train with...
Is getting paid to go train in Brazil and Thailand... Heres the deal.
The college he goes to (small school: Hendrix, Conway, Ar) is connected in some way with a large nationwide competition. Students from 50 schools (his being one) write an essay about something they would love to do, but do not have the money to do. Each school nominates 4, and the top 50 are chosen (not nec. one from each school, just the top 50).
Well one of my training partners wrote an essay about training BJJ in Brazil and Muay Thai in Thailand. His school subsequently nominated (over a year of application ensues)... he's turned down. However no one from their school is chosen, so Hendrix(his school) decides to write him a check for $15k to train over the next year!
Cliffs
-Nationwide essay contest (what have you always wanted to do but dont have the $ to do)
-Training Partner enters
-Training partner is turned down by national contest
-His college decides to send him anyway
-They give him $15k to go train BJJ in Brazil, and Muay Thai in Thailand.
-I'm jealous

Cool! What if he just pockets the money? Or does he have to prove he goes to Brazil and Thailand?

That is great ! Tell him Congrats! I wish that would happen to me or at-least one of my training partners so when they come back they could teach me some new stuff.

Phuket. I am currently at home sorting out an extended visa but should be back in by June 6th.
I've only been training Muay Thai so far but am going to start training MMA with Ray Elbe at MMA Phuket.
Are you in Thailand perchance?

He has to justify it in someway, but he said the guidelines are pretty loose since it was his college thats sending him and not the national organization. Sounds like the best possible scenario

He is training in Phuket in Thailand at either Tiger or Fairtex (most likely). I think he's going to Sau Paulo or Rio in Brazil.

Yeah that was unfortunate. He was jet-lagged etc. Landed a few hours before the show was meant to be filmed. He got the call that he was on 2 days before the fight.
I'm not making excuses for the guy though. He's an MMA veteran and an amazing grappler, I'm looking forward to working with him. I'll let you know how training turns out.
