No, you won't gain the same amount of muscle; you're not him, and he's not you. Genetics runs the show.
Lifting a weight to failure, or near-failure for 8-12 reps will generally promote the most mass gain. If, for example you bench press 135 for 12 reps, when, in actuality you could press 225 for 12 reps, 225 will promote the most mass gain. In that respect, yes, weight lifted is important.
