what do you think?

a 22yo kid next to me this AM benching 285lbs for 8 reps.

me, 30, benching only 165lbs for 8 reps (always been bad in bench)

so if we both do same reps, but diff. lbs, are we going to gain same amount of muscle? (sayin we are about same weight, same diet)?

Just curious is it really the AMOUNT of weight or the reps that gives everyone results....

My chest is fine, im just wondering hypothetically does the amount of weight really matter?

No, you won't gain the same amount of muscle; you're not him, and he's not you. Genetics runs the show.

Lifting a weight to failure, or near-failure for 8-12 reps will generally promote the most mass gain. If, for example you bench press 135 for 12 reps, when, in actuality you could press 225 for 12 reps, 225 will promote the most mass gain. In that respect, yes, weight lifted is important.
