i see so many threads in this forum stating, "i can't stomach cottage cheese", or "please help me figure out how to eat this". i can't help thinking that maybe it's all attributable to the brand and the way it is made. for example, i adore vermont-style cottage cheese, but some people find it way too watery. so, i've decided that i want to start a list of what cottage cheese brands are like. please add to this thread any brands you have tried and are able to compare!
breakstones cottage cheese
4% - very creamy, almost dessert-like. a bit too rich if you're used to lower fat cottage cheese.
2% fat - creamy texture, sweeter than most brands. lower in protein (11g per half cup).
0% fat - much sweeter due to added sugar. not the best macro breakdown (8g carbs per half cup)
friendship california-style cottage cheese
2% large curd - not a big difference between the lower fat, but if you are looking for large curd, this has the best macros.
1% fat - BEST macros i have found (16g protein, 4g carbs, 1g fat per half cup). a bit drier than most brands
1% whipped - great for replacing ricotta in recipes or for those who find an aversion to the curds. same macros
1% no salt - actually pretty difficult to stomach. a sodium sacrifice that i don't find to be worth it.
cabot vermont-style cottage cheese
0% fat - lowest in calories because it is the most watery (70cals per half cup).
horizon organic cottage cheese
2% fat - goes bad way too quickly! also watery, but a fair sacrifice if you want to buy organic
store brand cottage cheese
1% - generally speaking, store brands are not as good. this applies especially with wal-mart and winn dixie. i can stomach albertsons and publix, but i definitely prefer buying name brands.
