Can you elaborate on this? I'm just wondering because it seems a good knot firmly held in a decent base would make for a good brush. I also saw over on B&B that some people used this method to restore old brushes where the knot was gone but wanted to keep the base. What would make a full-brush purchase better than buying the 2 parts separately?

Agreed. I was just waiting for him to slice his fingers trying to put the blade in. I really don't see the point of the device, the blades are so cheap why would you wanna sharpen and reuse them? Just buy new ones. Even if you paid 50 cents a blade for some expensive blades and used them 4 times each that would be 12.5 cents per shave. If you shaved every day, 365 days a year without fail that would be a little less than $46 bucks using expensive blades. People spend more than that on one night at a club or a dinner out. Point is it doesn't seem like much of a savings.

Is eBay the best place to buy vintage safety razors? Anything to look out for specifically in the pictures and description to make sure I'm getting a good one that will still work well? Any recommendations on which model for a first vintage razor purchase? How about a Gillette Super Speed Z-3 1954?

They are the numbers from the greatest show of all time. Gotta keep that electromagnetic energy in check somehow...
On topic though - I don't really like the Crabtree & Evelyn shaving cream. Pretty tough to build a good lather with it unless I use a lot. Definitely going to pick up some Proraso or some cheap shaving soap to make a superlather with the C&E cream.
Maybe it's the C&E badger brush? Perhaps I should have gotten one more expensive than the Pure Badger Brush?

Nuff said. I am certainly no expert, truthfully I know nothing about it. Anyway quick question for anyone who may know. With shave soaps what is the proper way to build lather? I did it myself completely in the mug with the soap in it and worked it up until I had a good amount. I saw a video where mantic inverted his soap bowl and applied the soap to the brush, but then proceeded to lather on his face instead of building the lather in the bowl. Are both of these methods correct or is mantic's the way to go?

I think I will attempt his technique tomorrow. The way I did it worked well and created a lot of lather, but I don't know if it was as good as his way plus it seems his way used much less soap for each use. My products are shipping out from Westcoastshaving today so I figure either by the end of this week or beginning of next I should be over and done with my mach 3 and fusion.

Making your own brush isn't THAT hard. You can get a pre-made knot (the hard part) at the golden nib website. But getting it in a good handle may be hard.
And Lethal - if you don't want to get a merkur or something modern, then yeah check eBay. a 50's style superspeed is a great razor (don't get one with a red or blue tip, just the straight silver one)Founder of the Traditional Wetshaver Crew

tried some traditional wetshaving for the first time today after receiving my stuff from westcoastshaving
AWESOME...easily closest shave ever (beats my results with fusion and mach 3) with shaving cream, brush, and merkur DE razor. Using mantic's tips and tricks I boldly decided to go against the grain after a couple with-grain passes...a nick or two, but so far no irritation or ingrown hairs...
10-15 cents a blade, less irritation, and a closer shave than fusion or mach3 at $3-4 a cartridge? i'm sold and i'm not paying gilette for anything more (unless they make good DE blades)If you think you can, you will.
If you think you can't, you're right.

aint nothin wrong with them. i love my red tip. but it's not a good first vintage razor unless you know you want an aggressive/gentle razor. the red tip is for tougher beards and the blue for milder beards. the silver one is the middle of the road one.
