Ok, I was under the impression that a squat rack holds the bar so that you can lift it off of the rack from a standing position....
something like this i assume is high enough to begin standing:
http://shopping.msn.co.uk/reviews/sq...ame:squat-rack
but i also see squat racks that seem to hold the bar at waist height like this:

what I am wondering is if there is any benefits to either rack? Which rack is preferred? and which is most common?
If it is common to begin in the squatted position then i could probably do em at home with my piece of **** bench rack!!!

There's a big difference between squat stands and a power rack. Most squat stands have adjustable heights... both of the pictures you linked do even if it's not apparent. If you're going to be using the equipment to squat, a power rack is preferable... it has bars that serve to catch the bar if you fail on a rep. Neither of those pieces does that.
