    CALLING OUT KENT STATE UNI --- PHD Dietitian Says ALL Supplements DONT work

    So as some of you may or may not know, I've been working on a supplement book for the last 4 months. The book/site is 80% done, and we are looking into finalizing extras that come with the book, as in a DVD lecture/seminar and other electronic goodies.


    Anyways, my buddy Mike and I are trying to rent the KIVA on the Kent campus, it is a nice auditorium that seats about 150 people. We want to hold a FREE lecture seminar on the safe and effective supplementation for people who want to change their physique. We would set up two or three camcorders to record the event so we could put it on our DVD. The book would be sold, but that would be 100% optional, the seminar is free.

    So we go around campus, asking different faculty about booking the KIVA, and we are told that for a one-hour booking, it is $350 !!! We tell them this is a free seminar; presented BY students FOR students. They say that not only does the booking cost $350, but you must pay $15 an hour for an operator and they charge $20 for the use of a microphone. So obviously this is not going to work, so we go to the sports nutrition office and ask to speak to the lady in charge there, maybe she can help us out when she sees what a valuable service we will be offering to the students.

    This lady is overweight, not in shape by any means, and is a dietitian with her PHD hanging proudly on the wall. This was the most awkward conversation of my life! She blatantly states that, except for creatine, all sports supplements are completely worthless and that she does not want us presenting anywhere on campus because these types of supplements are forbidden to kent athletes. (SIDENOTE: no wonder kent state football team is garbage) She refuses to hear out anything we have to say, and the conversation is over.

    We are both kent state students (well i am alum but approved for grad school so still considered a student) and noone at kent was any help at all. Basically noone wanted to talk to us, kept referring us to other people who were equally rude and unhelpful. We were able to get a booking 2miles OFF CAMPUS at the kent city public library, who was more than happy to have us present, FREE OF CHARGE.

    I'm going to be printing out some articles on unsafe supplement usage, as well as a ton of pubmed astracts that show supplementation (for various compounds, creatine, beta alanine, protein powder, omega 3, etc... even specific supplement clinical trials such as novedex xt) and perhaps try one last time to persuade the lady there. Any help, if you guys have any pubmed links bookmarked, would be awesome

    Every nutritionalist/dietician/Ph.D. in nutrition I've ever seen, spoke with, had class with, etc, was all overweight and stupid such as the one you speak of.
    The best was in one class, the prof was showing us pics of supplement ads and one pic was a dude with his hands behind his head doing an ab flex type of pose and his lats were slightly flexed. The prof/fat bitch was circling his lats saying "What on earth is that supposed to be? That's not natural" blah blah, photochop, etc. PWNage ensued of me telling her that it IS natural if you're not a fatass and actually workout.

    Studies in mice have indicated that feeding diets containing 0.5-1% conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) considerably reduces body fat. These findings have attracted much interest because of the potential use of CLA as a tool to promote weight loss in humans. Several CLA studies in humans have now been published, and the objective of the present review was to give an overview of these experiments. Most of the studies were done in free-living subjects and were not strictly controlled for nutrient and energy intakes. None of the studies found a significant reduction in body weight, and only 2 studies showed a significant but relatively small body fat-lowering effect. Some studies suggested that CLA may have a tendency to increase lean body mass. Furthermore, there are indications from animal studies that CLA may have effects on plasma lipids. However, only one study in humans showed a significant HDL-cholesterol-lowering effect of CLA; in all the other studies, there were no significant effects on plasma total, LDL-, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations or on plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. Thus, the results of the studies in humans indicate that the effect of CLA on body fat is considerably less than that anticipated from mice studies and that CLA has no major effect on plasma lipids.

    In conclusion, we found that supplementation with 6.4 g/d CLA for 12 wk increases LBM in healthy obese humans, but has no significant effect on body fat mass, weight, BMI, REE, or RQ. Increases in C-reactive protein and IL-6 in the 6.4 g/d CLA group suggest that the higher dose may increase markers of inflammation in healthy obese humans. CLA is widely used in commercial supplements as well as being present in the diet, thus, these results need to be confirmed by future studies using varying doses of CLA over longer periods of time and in different patient populations.

    So..unless you are a fat woman...CLA doesn't seem to help w/ fat loss...however, if your goal is to put on LBM, there might be some hope in that aspect.

    You sure when she discounted "supplements" working, that she was referring to vitamins, minerals, EFA's, antioxidants?

    I find it fuking hard to believe she would discredit those when they are used in clinical settings for various diseased states.

    Last year I used to take my residents to one of the three stadium-seat lecture halls and watch DVDs on Thursday nights. The microphone was constantly hooked up so, I never had to pay anyone, and nobody EVER cared or asked questions.
