Guys,
I have read a variety of theories on this but they all seem to contradict each other. Anyone have any experience on getting that elusive bicep nerve to show through??
Some say less than <10% BF but I have see big fat guys with that nerve showing through. Hundreds of bicep curls the answer?
It is really frustrating as I can see all the veins popping on my arm but I have never seen that bicep vein shown through. Any advise is appreciated

"Everyone thinks they're on their way to single digit body fat as soon as they see a blurry four-pack in the right lighting.Your final body weight at 5-6% will be a lot less than what you think.Talk to me again when you get in contest shape." I'd be willing to say that 95% of people on this forum accomplish nothing in years, don't be one of those people. It's sad, they seem to have the knowledge many don't but can't utilize it.

I remember hearing somewhere that it's partly genetic, not in whole but could explain for some occasions.
You get back what you put in.

is it really that elusive? haha weird cause i have it depending on how much water im holding and im above 15% but i store most of that in the midsection so i guess it just depends on where you store fat

It's relative to body fat levels. Since my forearms have always been extremely lean I have some wicked and nasty veins in them, I was going to take some pictures as they look competition quality but I got lazy =/

Vascularity, in bodybuilding, is the condition of having prominent, visible veins.
Vascularity is enhanced by extremely low body fat ( Usually below 5%), low retained water, high blood pressure and muscle engorgement. Some bodybuilders use topical vasodilators to increase blood flow to the surface skin as well. Vascularity is a highly sought after aesthetic for many male bodybuilders, but less so for female bodybuilders where the target aesthetic is relatively more towards aesthetic symmetry than extreme development.
To achieve this affect you will see bodybuilders or athletes sometimes dehydrate themselves a few days before a competition or show, to achieve this look. Obviously self-dehydration is not recommended by any doctors.

HAHA i guess i would fall into the category of the big fat guy with the garden hose veins in my biceps. My arms are my pride and joy. Lots and lots of heavy curls have worked for me. I know its not kosher with most of the body building world but every arm work out i absolutly destroy my bi's and tri's to to the point of failure.
It doesn't matter how HOT she is, some guy somewhere is tired of her ****!!!!

yeah i think genetics has a lot to do with it, mine pops when im lifting, and is noticeable when im not. Im sitting at about 12% bf now, but my arms have very little fat. i personally hold most fat on my mid section

some has to do with genetics, the other is your bodyfat. Use diet and cardio strictly for 4 weeks and I guarantee you will notice a little more vascularity.

i <3 my bicep veins and how they go all the way down my arm. especially when i do shrugs. i only wish they loved me enough to visibly stick around when i'm not lifting. visibility diminishes greatly on off days. i'm happy with my overall vascularity thus far though.
i look forward to going to the doctor for blood tests and not having the nurse stab my arm 37 times to find a vein only to give up and draw blood from my hand.Rep Back 1k+ ....just sayin

Wow..great replies guys ..thanks
I guess my genetics suck because I have been working out for 2 yrs now and have a lot of vascularity and especially my forearms pop like crazy when working out (not so much when I'm not lol). Oh well, I'll bust ass in cardio more and we will see where it goes if I can get the BF down to single digits.
I just wish once in my life i actually saw that vein if only to prove i really have it lolLast edited by Fallfree; 04-21-2009 at 11:20 AM.

hey fallfree...
I have naturally high BP (in the 140s) and a fairly low bodyweight and I get a REALLY good showing from the vein on the outside of my arm, but not the one on the inside. This leads me to believe that's it's a lot to do with genetics and where your veins are positioned. For reference my BF is around 12-14%.

Always been jealous of those guys with the veins going through their forearms.. it looks like natural strength and is easily seen when wearing a t-shirt.

I'm probably around 30% BF still, and I have noticed veins popping in my forearm and bicep while I'm working out. You can't really see them any other time than when I am lifting though.

Strong bump for this thread..20 months old? lol.
Low bodyfat, high muscle/fat ratio, genetics, diet, etc..
Simple supply and demand. More muscle/less bodyfat = more circulation, more blood flow, more vasodilation, etc..
Like the below. EWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!! LOLOLOL.

Its genetics, some people just naturally has greater vasodilation than others while having the same muscle/fat ratio and without taking supplements.
If you want to look more vascular, decrease your water retention and take a NO product like Jack3d with some Pink Magic. Also decreasing your body fat % helps ALOT.

Genetics
I was also wondering about this. I'm leaning towards genetics. I have insanely huge veins in my shoulders and chest, visible all the time. Yet, my biceps have nothing. I work out these muscle groups equally as well.

I would imagine it's a combination of genetics, muscle mass, and bf%.
I had no sign of a bicep vein when I first started to lift, but adding 3 inches to my arms and when I was under 10% bodyfat I had a very noticble bicep vein (left arm was more pronounced than my right).PhD Candidate, Genetics.

Why do people WANT veiny muscles? I'm naturally veiny, but think it's gross. I try everything under the sun to get rid of this "look." What's the allure besides making a heroin junky really jealous?

Mine are starting to show closer towards the forearm area, but only when I lift. After which it disappears. It confuses me because I also read it shows when you have a low BF% and I'm far from having 20% BF. I think I'm sitting at 25%, 5FT 9 @ 191 LB's. Confuses the feck out of me.

I'm thinking it's more genetics. I'm at roughly 14 bf% and my vein is fairly visible on my bicep (pops out without flexing). I have a broad body composition so I tend to have more muscle mass than the average individual. But I'm no Hulk Hogan. Just a 14.5in arm circumference (which isn't that big, but decent size for just starting to lift).
Mine became visible by dropping my bf% from 19 to 14 from mostly heavy cardio and some weight lifting after. And a healthier proportioned diet of course.

vascularity is often due to the vein being "pressed" against the skin, be it because skin gets tight or muscle pushes the vein, often, combination of both... i hope i explained correctly
anyways, im by no means "big" and a tiny pathetic vein is starting to show, started showing through shoulder and its slowly working its way down... so, im guessing, as bf% drops veins will show if they are at a considerable size. I think genetics have a lot to do with it. At 19% body fat I have far more vascularity in my arms than my friend who is at 13% bf, on a good day I can see the bicep vein popping through, but the most prominent for me are the forearms, hands and wrists.
