I do dead lifts on back days, so I considered it more of a back/full body exercise. I just stared using straps, I can go a lot heavery which is great. But am I not working my back as much because of the straps.
Are the strap hindering the conection from my hands to my arms to my back

Straps just take some of the load off your fingers is all. The reason you can do more weight with straps is because you are not failing from grip fatigue, rather muscle (back) fatigue.
IMO straps or even hooks are a must. You want grip strength, go buy some Captains of Crush of Heavy Grips. You want back strength, use hooks/straps.
If you want to power lift then that is another story. But I think you are limiting yourself from a BB perspective by not using them.
Just a note: I do use Heavy Grips and can come within 1/4" of closing the 300 lbs grippers (COC#3 is rated at 280 lbs)Last edited by jawadams; 04-21-2009 at 06:05 AM.

While I do believe that straps are beneficial, they are def NOT a MUST.
You see powerlifters and even some bodybuilders that simply use their own grip.
Doing Deadlifts without straps is also a great way to improve grip strength. While doing other work as well.
I know a main problem with me is simply that my grip loosens from moisture, so I will have to invest in some chalk. That way I can still grip it properly, increase grip strength and still work my legs/back appropriately.Free Agent

I am saying that from a BB point of view they are a must. You can't be absolutely certain your grip won't fail without them.
Besides which, if you truly want to be a BB you won't give a **** how strong you are let alone how strong your grip is.
Most people want to be a little of both, and that is fine, I know I definitely do.
But I would rather do 400 lbs deadlifts with hooks and have my grip catch up later than limit myself.-You have to do what others won't to achieve what others don't.

Depends on your goals. If you want to focus on total body strength without "aids", then use straps. If you want to to focus on moving heavier weight for back training, use straps.
However, give chalk a try. I have found that by using chalk, I can lift the same amount of weight I did by using straps. And now my grip doesn't have to suffer.

To each his own. And again, there are individuals, including in BBing that have or can deadlift 400+ without straps or hooks.
But again, to each his own and as long as you are getting results. that is all that matters right.

Though, back to the OP, again, maybe could you enlighten us as to what may be your issue? This was eluded to, but maybe b/c you can work your back a bit more, maybe you just need to push a bit more? More reps or more weight?Free Agent
