The point of limping is that you show weakness. Seriously. Just don't limp. If the pot is folded to you and you have a hand that you want to play, you raise. If you raise every hand that's folded to you that you play, then no one will know the strength of your hand. (assuming you just raise a standard 3x raise). It's not that difficult.

Until people with decent cards start to call or raise back. Then they see you are raising with legitimate hands. If someone knows you either fold when you have hsit cards and raise with good ones, then you're not going to make much money.

If the board fits and you make a pair, you're probably best hand if only 2-3 people are in, and late position you can usually get a good read whether you are. If we're talking NL or PL, you can ensure you take the current pot... Plus 50/50 against a pair heads up isn't terrible.

AK unsuited, you have pretty much 6 outs or ~14% chance of completing. That's 6 to 1 odds against improving per card. Worse than a 4 flush. Against a pocket pair you're 50/50. Tell me how much $ you expect to make heads up...?

Look at it this way - if you raise preflop with AK (which you should) then someone willing to call that flop has decent starting cards. If you miss the flop, and are 2nd to act and they bet, you have to fold since you're probably beat and only have a small shot of improving to top pair. If you're first to act, you can semi-bluff with an additional bet, but you lose that bet if they hit the flop or were rolled up. If you fold, then you've lost your preflop raise. If your opponent does not call your pre-flop raise, then you've only won the blinds, with what you consider a good hand.

Lots of terribad advice in this thread. The people who say they hate AK,AQ,AJ, ect. the problem is people just play those hands incorrectly.

Understandable though if your new, but for you new guys..don't take a lot of the advice here too seriously. Loctus seems like he knows what he's talkin about but I only skimmed.

Man I was trying to bust this dude playing me with what seem top pair. I had As5s flop came out to two spades and a K. he bet high I called, he bet high again and I called didnt get the spade on the river. phuck had to fold. Iam sure he had his K paired or had a set.

So you're a calling into high bets with a 3:1 shot heads up? You obviously had no fold equity, so it all depends on what the chances are you figure he was bluffing... but doesn't seem like a good play from what you describe.
