    Could be several things

    1.) Not having proper form
2.) Not lifting heavy enough weights
    3.) Not pushing yourself
    4.) Eating too much
5.) Eating too much of the wrong types of food

I gain muscle at a very slow, steady rate and im always lifting weight as i switch between power lifting routines and normal bodybuilding routines frequently. Lately my belly has gotten out of control and it seriously looks like im pregnant in some of my photos.

By not eating enough for a long time, you will end up messing up your testosterone levels and metabolism.
Low testosterone + low metabolism => + Weight (fat)

Fat loss when cutting can slow down if you eat too little, but to actually add fat, I disagree.
    My routine:

    Mon - Biceps
    Tues - Triceps
    Wed - Biceps
    Thurs - Triceps
    Fri - Biceps
    Sat - Triceps
    Sun - Rest

You can't see back and legs, don't waste your time with that nonsense!

So, does that mean you should take in 1,000 cals more than you need? It takes time to put on lean mass. Eating at a caloric surplus is needed to grow, but there is a difference between eating enough to grow and just eating more than is necessary. Try to aim for around 1lb/week, anything much higher than that will only be packing on fat.
Back from my second rotator cuff injury... back to bulkng, trying to gain 8lbs over the next 8 weeks...

Not eating enough is certainly counterproductive for long term, sustainable weight loss....however, there is a reason I've never seen a fat anorexic girl

You probably aren't working hard enough at the gym, your workouts are too long and drawn out, your form is off, your intensity is low, you're eating way too much, etc.

If you're new to this I'd suggest you look into a program that fits your schedule best and give it a good try, following it to a T until you gain a better understanding of what works for you and what doesn't. Too many people design their own workouts without having a clue what they're doing, like doing 14 sets for biceps and 25 sets for back with crap form and intensity, ending up with 2,5 hour workouts. Anyway now I'm ranting but I'd definitely look into following some type of starting program like Rippetoe's, Madcow's 5x5, Max-OT, HST, etc.

True that. However, consider someone on a poor sugar diet of, lets say, 1,5kcal (no good carbs or protein. Mostly consisting of sugar and bad fat. Been there done that.)
You are eating, but eating not enough and the wrong food. I assure that your body composition will not be a lean one.

    1. Lack of sleep - this is the ONLY time the body grows and repairs itself. 8 hours at least every night.
    2. Lack of nutrition - are you eating healthy or drinking gatorade and eating french fries all day?
    3. Lack of compound progression - every time you lift weights, it should be more challenging, I.E. more reps and/or more weight
    4. Overtraining - are you giving your muscles plenty of rest or trying to lift every day? Don't use the same muscles again until they're not sore.
    5. Stress - are you stressed? Cortisol can be your worst enemy in this case by eating muscle and storing fat.
    6. Too many calories - are you eating too much? A general rule of thumb is your lean body mass (total body weight - total body fat x20 in daily calories).
    7. Lack of protein - are you getting at least 1g of protein per pound of body weight every day?
    8. Alcohol - are you drinking? If so, how much? Never more than, maybe, 1 drink a day.

x2 Though I would say that it probably has more to with not working hard enough than it does having a bad program. You should be gaining at least some muscle even if your program is kinda crappy, if you work hard enough at it.

dont get sucked into the whole "eat a ****-ton and get ripped and jacked" garbage. chances are if you just eat a ton and lift you will gain muscle but its very easy to go overboard with the cals and you will just put on unnecessary fat. if you have an adequate caloric excess eating more will not magically cause more muscle growth, growth takes time and patience, dont try to rush it then become dismayed when you dont get magical results in 8 weeks.

I feel your pain. I went from 165 to 180 lbs ( my goal...still not happy) and now my abs are pretty much nonexistent in photos. I've been getting compliments on my weight gain, but I hate that my stomach looks so chubby and I'm still a thin guy at 6'0 180 lbs. It's so discouraging because I see the results when I look at old pics of myself when I was really skinny and I see the new pics where I obviously put on weight and muscle (not enough to look the way I want to look) in my stomach, shoulders, arms, chest and thighs. But I wanted to be ripped not fat. I slightly feel like I liked better when I was doing p90x.

do you want to know why its simple you go to the gym too much too long cortisol gets high it tells your body to eat your muscles and store fat lol voila 15 sets per muscle per week is enough so if youre doing more your either superman or just dumb has **** its take 4 to 12 days for muscle to fully repair another indication is you dont get a skin streching muscle pump when your train because your doing the opposit of building muscle your destroying muscles

    No brain, no gain.

    You can't out-train bad nutrition.

"The fitness and nutrition world is a breeding ground for obsessive-compulsive behavior. The irony is that many of the things people worry about have no impact on results either way, and therefore aren't worth an ounce of concern."--Alan Aragon
