After doing deadlifts today, my back is undeniably stiff. It hurts if i bend over. I'm not sure if this is soreness or lower back pain...
while doing deadlifts i cheated on my last few reps to get through, and there was probably some imbalance. This is the first time I experienced such a lower back feeling though.
what is the general guidelines for the difference between soreness and pain in the lower back?

My lower back "post workout soreness" generally yields a greater degree of discomfort than any other body part, that's just how it is sometimes.
Deadlift isn't really the exercise for "cheat" reps otherwise you ARE going to end up hurting your back (if you havn't already, apparently).
Pain 2 a: usu. localized physical suffering associated with bodily disorder (as a disease or an injury) ; also : a basic bodily sensation induced by a noxious stimulus, received by naked nerve endings, characterized by physical discomfort (as pricking, throbbing, or aching), and typically leading to evasive action
Soreness b: painfully sensitive or tender <sore muscles>Waging war against misinformation!

Look, if you hurt your back, you'll know it. Stiffness is one thing, everyone gets it from time to time. If your not sure, then it's probably just stiffness. From my experience with lower back pain, you know when something's wrong. I've had back spasms and a somewhat herniated disk in my back, and it was easily the worst pain I've ever felt in my life, worse than when I tore the tendon connecting my thumb to my hand. Honestly, I'd advise you to just take it easy for a few days. If you think you may have hurt your back, do absolutely no lifting for 3 days. No matter what exercise you do, your back will play a role, with or without perfect form. The human body can only take so much pounding, so time off now and again is important so you don't get sidelined like I have for months at a time.
