This is a controversial topic, but it's good to take in at least 30 g of protein every 3 waking hours. Some people think the body can digest more protein, up to 70 g every 3 hours, and some people think less, down to 15 g per 3 hours. I'm a personal fan of getting 40% of my calories from protein and eating an equal amount of protein with each meal. I eat 4,000 kcal per day, so 1600 cals from protein, or 400 g protein per day. This turns out to be about 50 g of protein per meal if I eat 8 meals/day. Hope that helps.

eat 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per bodyweight daily
meaning you weigh 164lbs you should have at least 164g of protein intake daily spread throughout 5 meals

400g of protein a day? no wonder you need to cut. you don't need that much unless you weight almost twice your weight.

If I dropped my protein intake, I would just end up increasing my carb intake. The reason behind eating large amounts of protein is that the average person gains muscle the quickest on a 40% carbs/40% protein/20% fat macronutrient split, or something similar. To get 40% of your calories from protein means you need to take in a lot of protein.
