Hey.
What's up?
After dealing with a bunch of paperwork I finally got settled down in South Korea.
I went to my uncles place in Toronto and hung out there for a bit while one of his lawyer guys did some paperwork. Then when I finally got to South Korea I had to meet another lawyer and do even more paperwork.
I'm still trying to get a debit card at one of these South Korean banks, cause I was having a hard time here using my Canadian bank cards . . .
So far I've only been to some areas of Seoul (I have a cell phone with the South Korean lawyer’s number in it so when I get lost I just call him for help.)
Here are some things I've learned about South Korea so far:
- Korean guys like to dress "pretty". I have to think twice a lot of the time to figure out of a "pretty" Korean is a girl or a guy.
- There are places with washrooms that have toilets in the floor and you have to squat down to take a crap.
- Guys here really like spitting in public.
- In Korea when you're born you're considered 1 year old. So if a Korean tells you they're 18 (in Korean years) then they're actually 17 back in Canada.
- The subway system is pretty sweet. It's fast and cheap, but it gets crowded and hot a lot of the time. (I almost puked once because the subway car got so hot)
- You don't have to give tips for things like cab rides and pizza delivery, which is pretty awesome.
- They have lots of organic food here, but it's kind of expensive. (i.e. 6,900 won, which is ~5.25 USD, for 900 ml of organic milk)
- It's not very hard getting what you want here when you can only speak English. Lots of people here speak at least some English. If they don't understand what I'm saying then I find someone else who will understand me.
- The Internet just got hooked up in my apartment and it's very fast compared to the Internet I had in Canada.
OK. Today I was at E-Mart (it's kind of like Wal-Mart) eating some food in the food court and playing around with a camera I bought for a pretty good price. When I was done eating, and getting ready to leave E-Mart, this older white guy (he sounded American) came up to me and this went down:
Older Guy: Excuse me.
Me: Yeah?
Older Guy: My wife is a little paranoid and she thinks that you were taking pictures of her. Were you?
Me: No.
Older Guy: May I see the pictures on the camera?
Me: No.
Older Guy: Why not?
Me: Because I told you I didn't take pictures of your wife.
Older Guy: I'm asking very nicely. May I see the pictures on your camera?
[Now the guy was getting kind of angry. He didn't look strong and I thought I could put up an OK fight with the guy.]
Me: No you can't see my pictures.
Older Guy: Just let me see the pictures.
Me: No. You're pretty paranoid like your wife. I have to get going now.
[I try to leave but he steps in my way.]
[There's an elevator behind me so I hit the elevator button. I wait for the elevator to come. When the elevator finally comes the guy is still there just staring at me. I decide I shouldn't get in the elevator, because he'll probably go in too.]
Me: Bye.
[I do a quick fake move around the guy and I start walking away. But as I'm walking I realize I went the wrong way. So I have to turn around and walk by this guy.]
Older Guy: Oh. So you changed your mind? (He was thinking that I decided to go back to him to show him the pictures on my camera.)
Me: No. I went the wrong way. The exit is this direction. Sorry. Bye.
[I walked kind of quickly, but not too quickly so that it would look like I was scared.]
I got out of E-Mart safely and I never saw the old guy again.
When I was eating my food I did see that old guy with his wife (she looked like she was Korean), and she was pretty ugly looking.
Me eating some meat on a stick at E-Mart.
Also, I joined a gym. Right now I'm trying to figure out a good workout/diet plan.
OK. I got to get to bed (it's almost 6 AM here in South Korea).
Some guy sleeping.
