Yeah, that's valid. I read some horrid reviews on the club rio (adidas bjj) gi's, and a little while ago combatsports clearanced all of them for twenty dollars.. So I am a little wary of them.

For gis, you will need something more durable than a karate or tae kown do gi which will rip pretty easily. Purchase either a judo or jiujitsu or Brazilian jiu-jitsu gi. Judo gis are cut a little roomier due to the rules of judo. Brazilian jiu-jitsu gis, sometimes called jiu-jitsu gis will be cut to fit the body better like a suit. Check the size chart on the respective websites to determine which size you should purchase. Please note that there is an American/Japanese numbering system which goes from Size 0-6 and a Brazilian system that goes from A0-A4 or 5 generally so be aware of the fact and make sure you check the chart and find the proper size. You can also ask someone at the club which size you would be in an "A" size or a American/Japanese numbered "#" size.

Any colour is fine. Unbleached will generally be cheaper and slightly more durable because it is not as processed. Traditional colour is white, blue was added for judo competition and has become common for BJJ, too. Other colours exist as well but if you are not sure what colour to get and don't want to be embarrassed, stick with bleached white, or blue, which is easier to keep new looking than white.

Not all gis come with a white belt, so sometimes you have to purchase this separately. You can use any type of belt you want, but make sure it is a thick durable belt, like a judo belt or a jiujitsu belt which has the small black section at the end. No red silk sashes please.

As for weave- single weave is durable enough and will be more comfortable. Double weave is a lot more expensive and very uncomfortable and unncecesarry. Summer weave is very flimsy and will not last long. So choose a single weave gi to get the best value for what you require.

When you first receive your gi, the jacket will be too big and the pants will be long and roomy. This is because you need to shrink your gi. Wash your gi in hot water to shrink it then put it in the dryer for 10 minute intervals, checking the fit, until you have the desired size. The pants should come to your ankles and sleeves to your wrists. After that, just let it hang dry. If you have found a good size for your gi, wash it in cold water and hang dry with each cleaning. If you buy a coloured gi, you can use a little bit of white vinegar with your detergent and wash on cold to set the colours so there is no or less future bleeding of the colour. For some of you, you may need to dry the gi completely to get it to shrink to the correct fit (at which point it may not shrink anymore so you can just dry it thoroughly every time you wash it).

Please wash your gi after every training session. Do not wear a gi you have trained in for two sessions in a row. You may think you smell fine the first few times but believe me, the funk will catch up quickly. When you get home, hang it up so it can air out and dry. Then wash it and dry it in the dryer or hang dry it. Bleach is good every once in awhile as your gi ages and normal detergent no longer cleans it thoroughly but don't use it everytime you wash it because it will wear out the gi faster. Tumble drying can also wear out the gi quicker so some people only hang dry their gis. Fabric softener can make gis less stiff. However, I think if you guys are training gi, one to two times a week, the gis you purchase now will last you for at least two years and probably more, if you wash and dry it after every session.

I've had mine for 3 months and I train in it 2-3 times a week if I make the saturday gi class. Not a single tear, yet.

I know it's a lot but I wanted a club Gi because it's not like I'm gonna quit now.

Which ever one you get make sure it's a little heavy so it can take everything you're gonna do it to it.

I know you might not wanna do this but check out ebay, you can get some good deals there.

I got my gi off ebay for 62 bucks after shipping (Reevo [brand] Guard gi). It's actually reallllly nice.

It's a BJJ gi though so... Might not be able to use it for the Judo stuff
