    Knee pain and crunching sound

I've always had a slight popping sound in my knees when I squat down which has gradually worsened over the years and now sounds like a mixture of popping and crunching gravel. The sound is in both knees, but I only have pain in my left knee.

The pain has been consistent when I workout out my legs for several months now. I quit doing squats about 4 months ago and switched to leg extensions. However, the leg extensions only made the problem worse. One morning, after a decent leg extension workout the night before, I could barely put any weight on my left knee. The pain subsided after about 4 or 5 days, and I haven't done any leg extensions since then. Right now, the only upper leg exercise I can do are leg curls.

I can walk/jog without any knee pain; I only have the pain when trying to push weight with my knee.

So, does anyone have any idea what type of injury I have and what needs to be done about it; or what type of surgery/etc would a doctor recommend?

Also, if I opt out of going to the doctor, what leg exercises could I do to help keep a little mass on my legs that doesn't involve heavy pushing with my knees?

I'm only 28 and the pain is localized to my knees, primarily my left knee.

I know loads of people with popping/ crunching in their knees. Not sure what it is? Ligaments, calcified soft tissue maybe?

It seems to me thats its similar to the type of sound you can get with carpel tunnel in your wrists. My mum has this and gets a grinding/ popping.

Stand up, and do a standing one leg curl with your left leg. Go as high as you can. Now try to move the whole flexed leg backwards

    - Sounds like knee stability issue to me
    - do single leg sqats
    - single leg press
    - jimmy choo

PS: Leg extn places a lot of stress on joints. Its an exercise that shoudl be avoided - irrecpective of how good your knee is

    ^^^

I have the same sound but I have arthritis and bone spurs from a boken tibia and not so good surgery.
But it does not seem like your problem has a similar cause. By way I am 31 and the ortho says I have the knee of a 60+ year old but it does stop me.
Also does your leg ever lock? Like it gets stuck at a bent 100-120 degree angle?

    Unhappy

I was just about to search/make a thread about this. My knees make the same sounds, but I don't have knee pain. Just wondering what this disgusting sound is.
