I've always had a slight popping sound in my knees when I squat down which has gradually worsened over the years and now sounds like a mixture of popping and crunching gravel. The sound is in both knees, but I only have pain in my left knee.
The pain has been consistent when I workout out my legs for several months now. I quit doing squats about 4 months ago and switched to leg extensions. However, the leg extensions only made the problem worse. One morning, after a decent leg extension workout the night before, I could barely put any weight on my left knee. The pain subsided after about 4 or 5 days, and I haven't done any leg extensions since then. Right now, the only upper leg exercise I can do are leg curls.
I can walk/jog without any knee pain; I only have the pain when trying to push weight with my knee.
So, does anyone have any idea what type of injury I have and what needs to be done about it; or what type of surgery/etc would a doctor recommend?
Also, if I opt out of going to the doctor, what leg exercises could I do to help keep a little mass on my legs that doesn't involve heavy pushing with my knees?
