    Food scale question

I bought a digital food scale about a month ago and it weighs in both grams and ounces. I typically weigh chicken, fish and meat since all those things are measured in ounces. Anyway, I decided I would my "1/2 cup" of oatmeal yesterday. The box says 1/2 cup weighs about 40 grams and my measuring cup weighs about 11 grams. I was expecting the total to come out to 51 grams, but it came out to around 60. I may not be all knowing about weight lifting, but I definitely know how to measure a 1/2 cup! Do you think my scale just weighs high?

When there is any discrepancy, use the weight of a food, and not its' volume. The 1/2c is really just an estimate of what 40g of oats is, but it will often vary.
