It's been almost 3 hours since I finished my gym session and my muscles are still begging for oxygen. All I did was 12 reps of each set, full body workout, and 1.5 mins between each set. I'm not like obese or anything and I do cardio regularly, but this workout kicked my butt.

You can achieve HIIT without actually doing cardio

I barely do any cardio besides walking. Weight lifting feels like cardio to me... gets my heart beating more than when I jog on a tread mill or outside. I usually start getting winded @15 minutes into my jog, but I keep going. I'm usually dieing for oxygen within 8 minutes if I super set during weights. Some swear by cardio, some hardly do any.
Just do whatever you're comfortable with if you don't plan on competing. I personally enjoy pounding weights, whereas running/jogging makes me bored. I roller blade, walk my dog and bike for cardio. >.>07/22/08 - 260
