    why are squats so important?

I don't understand why squats are so important for building upper body strength.

Is it because it helps build up your lower back which helps to stabilize and hold your upper body?

they make you gain good mass and mostly in your legs and butt. But if you want big arms you have to gain weight on your body. You can gain a lot of mass on your leggs which would make your arms grow. I didn't workout my arms for over 5 months and gained 15 lbs. My arms grew almost an inch and now have a lot of stretch marks from growing too quick. All of this without working arms. so just squat to get big arms too

    Cool

since it recruits the upper body to stabilize the weights and put it thru the motion of squatting it leads to development of the upper body....and it does lead to a small increase in test. levels which helps...

You're right to a point, but I don't squat because it helps my upper body. I squat because I don't want to be unproportional. Nor do I want to have a ripped, solid upper body with flabby legs like I used to. Now I have a solid upper body and a solid lower body. Just looks a lot better.

They actually can make your arms get bigger/your entire body bigger.

This is because of a few reasons...the most important being hormonal.

Deadlifts actually do this in a better way, but squats do the same....

What happens is that doing compound leg exercises with heavy weights (i.e. Squats, Deadlifts, Leg Press) causes growth hormone to be released in your body (all over) so the rest of your body grows as well. There are a few more that I won't go into...

What happens is that doing compound leg exercises with heavy weights (i.e. Squats, Deadlifts, Leg Press) causes growth hormone to be released in your body (all over) so the rest of your body grows as well. There are a few more that I won't go into...
Hormonal increase of GH and the insulin-like GH as well as test last only for a few hours. Are not amazing and by the next day levels are lower and cortisol levels are actually higher. So it tends to end up doing nothing.

When I first started lifting I didn't squat, I talked with some body builder and did some research. Squats are one of the best compound workouts to do. They work your stabilizer muscles which you need for balance and power. Squats work your bigger muscle groups so with a squat it drops more chemicals and testosterone to help your body rebuild, which is why people that do the "Olympic Powerlifting" squat each day they workout.
