People out of work, are you guys networking?
I know I haven't like I should have. Luckily I've been talking w/ this Career Counselor and he has helped revitalize my job search.
Monster.com, etc. etc. kinda suck for getting a job because there is 1 job and 1000 applicants. Just FYI.

Monster.com is not good anymore.
You should join LinkedIn - awesome way to look for jobs. Twitter is pretty good for it also. Other good sites are simplyhired.com, jobster.com, and careerbuilder.com
Good luck!

not out of work, but I had a "career counselor" of sorts while I was working at Verizon Wireless.
Tired of call center jobs, I wanted to do something more, but didn't know how to get started in that direction. She had me write out every job I ever had, and what I did at each job (starting from Burger King when I was 14, etc)
She then helped me revamp my resume, incorporating all the skills, my knowledge base, etc.
She gave me some key interview tips, but, most of all, gave me the "push" I needed to actually think and BELIEVE I was qualified for more than the jobs I had been always applying for.
That's how I got on with the city and I actually do what I went to school for (Network Admin). I'm grateful she took the time to help me.
*runs away sobbing* lulz
anyway, it must be tough out there. Please stay confident and consistent and the jobs will come.
good luck to OP and all that are looking for work

No a headhunter is a recruiter.
A career counselor helps a jobseeker with positioning themselves in the job market and helps them highlight their qualifications. Some of these services such as updating your resume, creating a 'marketing' plan, professional advice on how to interview properly, etc usually costs. In this case this guy knew my situation and wanted to help me out so it was free for me.

I really appreciate it. I really don't want to do call center stuff again but damn in Georgia the unemployment rate is ~%9. I am looking in other states. Heard there are a lot of IT jobs in Texas actually.

If you're in college, you can probably get these totally free. Mine was, even though I had already graduated by the time I saw the counselor.

Well, *were* you at some point? Sometimes it doesn't matter if you're not currently enrolled.

This should be a support thread for those who are looking for a job.
I went to a UNIX group last night, met two recruiters and made 4 other contacts. Yay me.

This is good advice.
Just don't submit your resume to the HR black hole and expect a return phone call. If you see a position that peaks your interest, do some detective work and try to track down the person who most likely doing the hiring and make contact.
HR and corp recruiters only exist to screen applicants. I have several positions I am trying to fill right now it is just as frustrating trying to find good candidates as it is for candidates trying to find a job.
As much as I have tried to coach him, my corp recruiter still does not seem to have any idea what I am looking for. When a qualified candidate shows the initiative to track me down and bypass HR, I almost always move them to top of the list and grant an interview.
