Royal Marine Commando's Help !
hi guy's ive had my royal marine application accpeted, ive done all the test, the only thing they have held me back on was my medical for my ingrown toe nail. which has no been removed, any of you guys ever had a toe nail removed and been let into the forces ?
the commando officer said as long as its fully healed and is not prone to infection then i should be able to pass the medical again, any of you had similar to this ?
Also secondly i have 5 weeks to build up my cardio, i need to do this below :
2.40 km in 12 minutes
60 second break
then do 2.40km in 8.30 seconds.
How is the best way to increase my cardio ?
i have a huge hill next to my house, i could try running up that ? because that takes indurance and stamina and would surely increase both ?
or would you just run 2.40 km and build up to it in time ??
any help greatly appreciated. Reps

Good job on getting in. I was just watching the ITV show about the Royal Marine Commandos last night, training looks like a bitch.
If you have any more meetings before you go in, ask about how you can train for it, if not phone them.
Just read that training is 32 weeks, **** me!

Well IMO the best way to train for running 2.4 k would be to run 2.4 k.
Maybe 2-3 times a week, then one day a week do 2.4, rest for 60 seconds then do another 2.4.
Seems like the most sensible way to train to me. I have a friend in the Marines at the moment, he's just done the test IIRC in Devon. He pissed all over the first 2.4k and I'm sure you'll do the same, it wouldn't be that hard. The second part he lost a shoe right at the start, was going to carry on without it, decided to go and get it and still did it in under the time limit! So don't stress yourself out too much. On the day the adrenaline will be pumping, and everyone around you will be doing the same. Hopefully you're not one of the retards he was telling me about that turned up not being able to do one pull-up...
Good luck.

3 miles in 21:30?
Pretty much cake, your average high schooler running cross country can do that; I'd hope your average marine could or else you're in for some trouble.

Hay matey, Good luck with that!
Im hopefully gonna do the same when i get back from travelling.
I also had an ingrowning toenail and had half of a nail removed. This does not effect me or my running at all, so i cant see a problem with it stopping you getting in the forces
Best of luck and all you can do for cardio is just keep running. On there website they have a good training guide to make sure your up to scratch for the course so check it out!
Not 100% sure if i can link but here it is
http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/royalmar...aining-course/
Apologies if im not allowed to do that :S
once again good luck and let me no how you get on!

Hey tommy, will do man, when you thinking of signing up approximtley ?
the only reason im scared of him turnign the nail down is because last time he saw my nail he was like "omg!" "FAILED". ive had the toe nails perminatley removed now, just it still looks disgusting, the docter's are very sensitves, especially the marine one's. They failed my friend because his knees bent and another because he diidnt look strong enough when he was your avarage noob,
post me up on what your doing, be good to hear from you soon man,

id make sure you bulk up a bit before you go a lot of lads drop like flys from pneumonia because their too skinny and cant handle the cold.
mate of mine did initial 12 weeks but he used to do boxing 3 times a week and 3/4mile runs everyday over a period of 7 years, theirs no such thing as being too fit for the marines imo.
you should aim to do maybe double the amount they expect that way you know you've always got that little bit extra in reserve.

To increase my 1.5 mile I just run alot of 1.5s.
I'm certain the second run you do is a best effort that has to be under 10.30, not 8.30 and the first one is under 12.30. Anyone applying for the Royal Marines should be able to do an 8.30 though anyway IMO.

I'm not saying US Marines are crap, blah blah blah. I'm just saying that in the UK, the Marines are different from yours. They would be better compared to one of your special forces.

strong bump...
Yes, of course, the US would slay the UK. Your military spending is far, far greater, and your population is too.
What I am saying is, UK Marines do not compare to US Marines AFAIK. They are more akin to a special force, as I said before.

That is the basic test you have to pass in order to join (i.e. pre training)
This is what they do.
"Royal Marines recruit training is the longest basic modern infantry training programme of any NATO combat troops"
"A nine mile (14.5 km) speed march, carrying full fighting order, to be completed in 90 minutes; the pace is thus 10 minutes per mile (6 min/km or 6 mph).
The Endurance course is a six mile (9.65 km) course across rough moorland and woodland terrain at Woodbury Common near Lympstone, which includes tunnels, pipes, wading pools, and an underwater culvert. The course ends with a four mile (6 km) run back to CTCRM. Followed by a marksmanship test, where the recruit must hit 6 out of 10 shots at a target at 200 m. To be completed in 73 minutes (71 minutes for Royal Marine officers), these times were recently increased by one minute as the route of the course was altered.
The Tarzan Assault Course. This is an assault course combined with an aerial confidence test. It starts with a death slide and ends with a rope climb up a thirty foot vertical wall. It must be completed with full fighting order in 13 minutes, 12 minutes for officers. The Potential Officers Course also includes confidence tests from the Tarzan Assault Course, although not with equipment.
The 30 miler. This is a 30 mile (48 km) march across upland Dartmoor, wearing fighting order, and additional safety equipment. It must be completed in eight hours for recruits and seven hours for Royal Marine officers, who must also navigate the route themselves, rather than following a DS with the rest of a syndicate and carry their own equipment.
All tests are done in fighting order of 32 lb (14.5 kg) of equipment."
No idea how that compares to US Marines.
