Death in the Gym
I have heard stories of people collapsing in the gym, but this morning I actually saw a man die, right when I walked into the gym lobby. Seemed like a massive heart attack. Honestly, I didn't like it, and it disturbed me.
The man was probably in his 70s, was always there, not in very good shape and always said "good morning" to everyone he passed in the hall.
I felt more sad for his daughters who were there.
I didn't think this was too far off topic, but after only telling one person about it, I had to let it go.

That is crappy that you saw that. It does happen and will continue to happen....just keep it in perspective that this could have been completely random. He was over the age of 70, out of shape...so many factors! Very sad though. More motivation for alot of us to keep in shape throughout our lives and try and keep a healthy body. Stay strong!

That sucks. It always hits home when you actually see the body. A guy was shot to death at a local store just minutes before I arrived, deffinatly messes with your head.
At least they guy at your gym lived a long life!

We've all got to go sometime. Yes it is sad but it sounds like he was a nice and friendly sort and at least he was going to the gym and getting out and meeting people not sitting around waiting to draw his last breath.

Very sad. At least the old guy didn't suffer long.
Last year, I saw a 20 year old kid lying dead in the road next to his motor cycle. Then I saw the police arrive and throw a blanket over the body. It bummed me out for months.

I happened to be around a lot of deaths, especially in my early teens, including witnessing a murder at age 14. And then while working at Hartsfielf Int'l airport for many years (airports are high stress environments), saw my share of people who collapsed in restrooms and on aircraft... the same way you describe. I got past the shock stage by early teens, but I don't think we'd be human if we didn't get past the "bothered by it" stage. It always makes us reflect on our mortality. As much as it's a negative experience, good can come from it...in the way you may change or at least act toward others for however long it lasts.

Sucks that you had to witness that! I hope it doesn't trouble you for long.
Good luck!

i was in wrestling practive at 14 and my asst coach who was 25 had a heart attack right there on the mat and died. Turns out his family has a history of heart problems. I can honestly say that 23 years later it still bothers me and the visions never really go away.

Sorry to hear the sad news and I feel for his daughters. I spent 3 years working ERs in my younger days and the reality of dying hit home quickly. One good note to this post. At least he died in the gym That would work for me.

Hang tough! Unfortunately, we all must go at some time or another. But 70 sounds younger and younger to me everyday.

I want to go out fighting for someone, protecting or defending them. I'm going out like a Klingon Warrior, or a Spartan.

I'd rather go out like Augustus (Caesar). Well, except for the part about poisoning by his wife......

Sorry you had to see that, bud. It's never easy.
To be honest, for me, it gets more difficult the older I get. I dunno, guess I appreciate people more than I did when younger, and realize more the sense of loss.

Oh that's good too. George Harrison died with his wife and son and others by him; all the while he chanted and prayed to the Lord until he passed.

This happened to my sister about a month ago at a gym in San Francisco. A guy in his 40's just collapsed right in front of her from a heart attack. They said he was probably dead before he hit the ground.

I had a friend in his early 30's drop dead in a marathon. He was one of the fittest people I'd ever met. I had another friend and colleague in his early 40's drop dead on a treadmill. Another outwardly super-fit guy. Neither of them had family histories of heart disease and neither of them had any warning signs. With both of them the first sign was "bang" and they were dead. Both of them apparently dead when they hit the ground.
So I guess the moral is live for today because you never know when your number is coming up.

Hey MarkIT....
So sorry.
I understand that it would be 'disturbing' for someone to witness.
I certainly can relate albeit under much different circumstances.
We all will mourn these experiences in our own way and it is quite unpleasant to see death occur before our eyes.
Stay strong amigo.
Respectfully.....
