Driving a manual transmission car? How long does it take to learn?

I've got a big problem. I got my license recently (never needed one before so I never bothered to take the test). I took the test a couple weeks ago and I passed. Now, I've only driven automatic cars so far and I've never driven a manual transmission. I don't have a car to drive because I can't add on to anyone elses policy (my parents are on an "adult" policy and I was quoted 600/mo to add on to their policy). The insurance agent said I could get 60-70 monthly for liability if I get a standard sedan but I want to get a civic si. I'm sure my insurance rates will be at least 200 monthly but thats ok.

Would it be stupid for me to spend like 15k on a civic si if I don't know how to drive it or would I be able to learn really quickly? I basically need a car soon and I don't want to settle for any other car except a civic si. This is 100% my own cash. Should I possibly enroll in some sort of training program for manual cars or would that be a waste of money?

That's the problem. No one I know has a manual. There no way for me to "practice" without buying a car for myself.

    Months?

Thats long. Really takes a few hours of drive time if you have a ****ty teacher. Some will get it in a few minutes. My dad was **** at explaining to me, so it took me about 2 hours total drive time, spread over a month.

EDIT: No teacher... well, all I can say is, in first gear, don't be afraid to hold the clutch even though you are still moving, just keep the clutch barely engaged until you are confident it won't stall anymore, and then slowly release the clutch. When shifting into second, do the same thing. 3rd gear and up already has enough momentum that you won't really have to worry about stalling at all, unless you are absolute **** at shifting gears. When slowing down, either downshift as you slow down, or just stick it in neutral. Sometimes I have my music jamming and dont pay attention as I slow down with my vehicle still in gear, and I stall. Embarrassing.

It should take more than a week before you can do it without stalling. And sporty cars have short friction zones and heavy clutches so they are going to be harder to learn on than say an old nissan truck.

Lol that would freak me out. I'd rather crash my own car than someone elses. That would be embarrassing as hell. I was thinking of enrolling in a drivers training course on some ****ty old manual car and take a couple of lessons.

I know the basics already. You're basically using the clutch when you change gears, instead of the gears changing automatically. I know the whole concept, but I just haven't had the chance to test it out yet. Do you guys think it would be too dangerous to straight up practice on a new car?

Not at all. I learned on a jeep which stalled real easy, so learning was a pain in the ass. I notice a difference between trucks and cars, and seems trucks stall easier then cars.

3 years ago my dad taught me in an empty parking lot for about an hour..then had me go on a small incline and practice from a dead stop..then after about an hour and a half had me drive home and i was freaking out but did fine..then practiced each day (about 5 more days) and i was fine on my own after that..its not hard at all once you practice for a bit

if you have half a brain it should take you a few days and after a month it becomes second nature.

and once you get used to it you'll feel odd driving an automatic trying to press down on an invisible clutch. automatics become boring after you learn stick.

its not hard at all you can learn no problem in an hour. Just take it down some backstreets until you get use to it, you stall it a couple times then you figure it out.

First day driving alone is the scariest. It was my first day after getting my license, first day taking a manual out of the neighborhood, and first time driving alone. I was so scared I'd stall in the middle of the road and get crushed by a semi on the way to school and the way back home.

It took me a week to do on my 240sx. I'd try to drive it at night for a couple of hours for a week and go from there.

Yea I'm not stupid. I passed my driving test in compton without even knowing the area or having practiced in the last month.

I drove for less than 5 hours in the couple of months before taking my driving test and I passed.

    OP

It's very easy. Don't stress about it and just do it.

My dad taught me in an hour and I was forced to drive it to go to work (this was when I was 16)

so the first week I stalled it a bunch but eventually you get the hang of it and driving it everyday, I got good at it within a month of daily practice.

just pretend the pedals are a balance scale and let go of the clutch as you gently apply the gas. Be smooth and you wont jerk or stall it, but you will a lot when you're starting out.

I love manuals and all my cars have been so far. I will definately have at least on in the stable even if I have autos or semi autos in the future.

It also helped me to learn how to ride a motorcycle since the concept is the same.

definitely is..i live in northern NJ in the big hills and when he told me to pull out of the parking lot i was sweating my ass off because i was so nervous of stalling on a hill and rolling down it into something..i did fine though its real easy as soon as you learn to stop and go on an incline

i got a civic recently, my buddy had a similar civic that i drove a couple times to get the understanding down. Its embarrassing stalling in the intersection, but the embarrassment will make you learn faster lol. Took me about 1-2 weeks to be natural with it and now im just perfecting my technique.

I bought one without knowing how to drive standard and after a few simple instructions from friends I taught myself.

Took me about a week to get the hang of it, a few months before I was a master.
