I've lost 85 pounds in the last 9 months. I've gone from 43% body fat to 28%. I think I need to keep losing weight. Until I get to at least 19% but my doctor told me that I shouldn't, and that I'll grow into my body as I get older.
Please someone shed some light onto this. She is basically asking me to stop existing. Will this really hurt my development?

my doctor when i was younger said not to worry about the weight i had put on and that i would grow into it when i hit puberty. well i ended up growing even more untill i was well over 350(stayed off the scale after345).yeah doctors do not know everything. i would say talk to other doctors, and get a many opinions as possible, i wish i had. continue to work out. just make sure you are losing the weight in a healthy way. getting all the nutrients and things you need to grow.multivitamins and such.

Shes a very smart women, doctors just seem to have it out for bodybuilders. It seems as if everything we do is unhealthy, but for some reason bodybuilders are healthy as ****.
I'm pretty worried now. Not so much about growing tall. I just don't want to have any problems with "development"R.I.P. Frvrmuscle

GJDM at losing all of that weight. I wouldn't listen to the doctor, I think that you'll be fine. Then again, I'm 5'5" and have barely grown in two years.......

you probably need to slow it down some now that you are at a more reasonable bodyfat%. it is very likely that you will grow taller in the next couple years and with that growth it will lean you out more
I would continue dieting , but up the calories, try to lose only 1-2 pounds per week.
I grew around 5" from 16-17 so yea... that could change a lot of things for you.Proud Member of the "I lost 100 Pounds Club"!

i think your doctor is worried that your diet may be lacking essential nutrients, as long as your getting all your vitamins and minerals, and getting enough protein carbs and fats (especially the good ones) then you should be fine to keep losing weight without stunting your growth
this is sort of classified under nutrition also, where doctors usually aren't sufficiently educated

I would say it is not good practice to take a doctor's advice to a public forum just because the doctor told you something you didn't want to hear. I'll assume that this is your family doctor whom you've been seeing since you could walk and not some random voodoo practitioner you pulled from the yellow pages. It's okay to talk to your doctor about your physique goals and ask her (or him) to recommend a nutritionist. Just a suggestion.

Thanks Bro.
I'm getting almost 200 carbs a day. Is this not sufficient?
I only try to lose about 1-2 pounds a week. I've made the mistake of losing weight to fast before. Thanks for the info Bro.
In that case I should be fine, but others say I need the extra calories to.R.I.P. Frvrmuscle

No. This was a first time visit.
If a doctor tells me something that I don't think makes very much sense, then I will question it and try to research the matter as much as I can.

you need to just eat enough calories you can still lose weight and grow as long as you get your all your nutrients....if you are slightly under calories you will be fine your body will get the calories from fat stores.
i would def not be trying to lose weight drastically fast, just 1-2 pounds a week
if you lose fat the right way, it wont mess with the rest of your development

internal medicine doctors study nutrition to some degree. this means that she has far more credibility than a 16 year old teenager. i agree that you should see a nutritionalist, but you don't have to be one to know that on the course you are taking, you could potentially suffer side affects. its really a no brainer and is just common sense.
just eat good clean whole foods and stay away from junk.Last edited by steelsnow; 03-24-2009 at 04:42 PM.

I don't know if other have already seen your diet in other threads or what, but I think your doctor may have a point if you are eating >2000 calories a day.
I have to imagine that this is the case because why else would she tell you to stop what you are doing? No doctor would recommend that someone stay overweight, and depending on where you are on the puberty road, she could be right again. If you are just starting (a late bloomer, if you will) then your body has some very drastic changes to go through, particularly hormone-wise.
Since I haven't looked at your diet/exercise, I'm just going to suggest that you get your BMR and create a small deficit (500 cal//day), and get to lifting weights 3-5 times a week.
Generally I have a feeling that she asked you questions and didn't like your answers, such as you are cutting your calories too low.

That is my log, (Where my diet is listed)
I eat 2,500 calories on lifting days, and 2000 on rest days.
She doesn't think I'm overweight for some reason. Neither do most people. Oddly.
Agreed.

Do some research. Calculate what your BMR should be and document what your diet will be. Show her your exercise plan. Take that to her and ask her if that is okay. If it isn't ... then ask her what is okay. You are 16yrs old and your body is going through "changes". The doctor knows a lot more about the body than you or I ... but ... showing her your healthy lifestyle might help in getting exactly what it is she wants you to do. Also ... talk to a nutritionist and maybe get a 2nd opinion.
And honestly ... you don't look over-weight. She might be guiding you in the right direction."The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you're a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds." ~Henry Rollins

I would get a 2nd or 3rd opinion from other doctors. Obviously, because you are 16, you still have some growing to do and if you are on a calorie deficit for a long time, you may not be getting all the nutrients you need. I'm guessing thats what the doctor is getting at.
I'm not an expert though, so I recommend to see other doctors to see what they say. Being overweight can be just as unhealthy, so its a difficult situation.
Hows your cardio situation? Perhaps you could eat more and do more cardio to stay in deficit...

The only problem I see with that is, well doctors tend to hate body building. To them, squats will give me AIDS, deadlifting will give me a low sperm count, and the military press will turn me into a munchkin. So it can be difficult sometimes.
I think I'll message Alan Aragon. Nobody know more than him.
Edit
I'm still at 28% body fat. I think that's still overweight.
Not pro level. My bad. The bodybuilding lifestyle can be a very healthy one.R.I.P. Frvrmuscle
