Which is the better exercise for power? Let's say ~40 yard sprints and heavy sets of 5 squats ATG. Both hit me hard just wondering if there's an advantage to each which I'm sure there is. I know sprints hit my hams HARD..

I like both, Sprints definately brings out definition in the legs. When I played HS football I did very little sprinting over the summer and tons of heavy squatting. My 40 time dropped from a 4.9 (Spring) to a 4.7 (Fall) from just heavy squats. So they can help with speed too.

power is a function of force(developed through heavy squats and sprints) and speed(in muscle physiology it is better known as rate of force devopment.Developed by sprints.)Squats will have a positive affect on leg power but sprinting is better...If you want to develop leg power the Olympic lifts, squat jumps, and polymetrics are the best at developing this.

Sort of off topic but still related: there is a related article in the latest M&F on athletes who improved their vertical leaps by doing 3-5 reps of heavy squats 4-5 minutes prior to measuring their vetical leaps...I wonder if this could also apply to short sprints like you asked (40yd dash)... According to the article the squats prime your fast twitch muscles to contract faster and more powerfully. Just thought this might help if you are training for a sport!
