ATTN: iPod Touch Owners
My current iPod is on the fritz and so I'm looking to get a new one. This may be a silly question but can you surf the net on the touch as you would on a normal computer?
Also, for those that may own an iPhone, is the only difference between the two the fact that you can make phone calls? Is all else equal?
Thanks for the help

< touch owner, 16-gig. hi.
it comes with wireless access (safari), so you just have to tap into a signal. i don't really enjoy typing as much as the keypad takes some getting used to; but, surfwise, yes... it's the same. though some sites are displayed differently (cnn and mlb.com come immediately to mind).
prefer the touch over the phone because, well, i already have a decent phone and i've heard the data package is a bit pricey/month. could be wrong.

Data plan prices are my only concern (well, that and the cost of the iPhone itself + having to lock into a contract if I buy it through my service provider).
Thank you kindly for the info.

Man are those things ever small! (That's what she said)
I figure the $230CDN that the 8gb is at right now isn't TOO bad. I've had my current iPod for over 3 years and I paid like $180 at the time so it's not that much for a WAY better iPod.

honestly, not sure how much of a monetary difference there is between the 8- and 16-gig for you, but the 16 is a much better investment...
i would've filled the 8 easily with all the music/vids/apps i have loaded on there now. with the 16, i have just a little over 3 gigs left and i have a ****-ton already loaded.

I setup a VNC server ( http://mochasoft.dk/iphone_vnc.htm) on my computer and downloaded mocha's free app on ipod so I can remote connect to my computer, and can surf using a regular browser.

once itunes is installed... yes.
but you can't just connect your ipod and drag in files from your hard drive.

no, no... the actual itunes program is free. you have to pay to purchase music/vids from the itunes store, though.
you can pull in files from your hard drive... it's actually a hell of a lot easier to maintain itunes than it is to maintain all of your music/video folders (if you're like me; i had tonnns).
it's very efficient. you can also play/watch music/video files right in the itunes window.

One perk is buying on amazon = zero sales tax. I get a discount through my company but i'd actually pay more because of Tax.
I might just get a 32 gig touch, this reminded me my original 30 gig video is taking a **** (well input port is fawked).

Yeah, I have a few movies on mine, and of course episodes of my favorite tv show, House M.D. Helps out tremendously in regards to passing the time.

I have an 8gig one. I don't listen to my entire music collection, so I put what I want to listen to for the week or day or whatever whenever I feel like it. I don't like browsing through a large collection of songs on my touch.
I do like having apps and being able to put movies and tv shows on my touch and watching it on the go. You can get a free converter to whatever apple movie files are from download.com. So technically, you don't have to buy it off itunes
I also like having apps. Lots of fun free games, food finders, language learning stuff.... etc Safari is nice too. bb.com shows up pretty well on it. zoom in and zoom out feature...
If you like copy and pasting, I say wait til they release that on the latest software update or else you'll have to pay $10 for it. There's other stuff on the update, but mostly for the iphone.
Hm... that's my two cents for now. Hope it helps.

You can get them from demonoid, or if you have the seasons as I do, rip them to your cpu and use the converter to convert the files to ipod capable.

from my understanding another difference is that the touch might have a powerful processor for game apps, although this might have changed with newer versions.

There are some apps that are free you just have to find them, I rarely pay for any apps. In regards to your Internet question, let me put it this way I'm on my iPod Touch right now if you turn it sideways it's not too hard to type once you get the hang of it

Both true. I think if you wait for the firmware upgrade coming this summer, you get free bluetooth as well. Turns out the ipod touch was capable of it all along... or you can buy a touch now and just upgrade later for $10 if you need bluetooth. I don't really need it
