It's been a few years but I have been to a lot of raves. I'm not sure of the scene is the same as it was in 2000-2002, but there used to be a lot of drugs and a lot of rave toys (glow sticks, menthol rub, water bottles, and menthol cigarettes). I dug the scene for the music and the girls (which could be really good in southern california).
raves are not the same as it used to be.... but back then.. it was FUN. yes, lots of E and glowsticks.. and a LOT of very adorable cute girls that likes to put glitter on them... if you are a social person you will meet a LOT of girls... more than 1 occassion i met 2+ girls and we'd make a human sandwich and caress/massage/make out with each other through out the night.. it's an experience... an "escape" from the every day real world.
rave scene here in Brazil is amazing. Ive been to a couple in the past month and they were a lot of fun. I stayed away from the E cause drug laws down here are really strict
