    Living happiness
When you chase happiness it can be frustratingly elusive. Once you arrive at where you thought it would be, it has sped off to somewhere else. A sure sign that you're chasing happiness to no avail is the phrase "if only," as in "if only I had a new car, then I'd be happy" or "if only I had a better job, then I'd be happy."

It's great to have higher and higher ambitions. Yet when you make your happiness conditional, you never seem to be able to meet all the conditions. You arrive at one "if only" to discover a whole set of new "if onlys."

A better strategy is not to chase happiness but to make it right where you are. Rather than putting conditions on your happiness, simply allow it to be. Could you be happy right now, right here? Of course. By all means pursue your dreams. Make things better. And enjoy each moment along the way. There's no need to wait for happiness. You don't get it by chasing it. You have it by living it.

    Insider secrets
The best way to become skilled and effective at anything is through practice. Whether it is managing a business, ice skating, networking with other people, writing, earning money or cooking, the way to get better at it is to actually spend a significant amount of time doing it.

We like to think sometimes that there are "secrets" which make people effective at what they do, and that if we could just acquire those inside secrets we'd be stunningly successful. Certainly there are many things you can learn from those who are more experienced. Yet there are no secret techniques, there is no inside information, which can take the place of practice.

The mind, body and spirit are amazingly adaptive. Anything you do often enough, you will learn to do well. That's no secret. It's plainly obvious. Instead of looking for a secret technique, just get busy and get some good, solid, real-world experience. Then you'll have the ultimate inside information.

    Misfortune behind you
How do you respond when something doesn't go your way? Do you agonize, complain and bring yourself down by feeling sorry for yourself? Do you make the situation even worse by letting it stop you in your tracks?

A negative experience is no reason for negativity. In fact, a negative experience is all the more reason to remain resolutely positive. The thing to do when you've been knocked down is to get back up. Wallowing in your misfortune makes no sense at all.

Have you had a bad day? Have you had a bad month? Smile. It's over and done with. Move forward. The past does not equal the future unless you allow it. Have you tried your best and failed? Smile. That's history. Look up. Look forward. Set an even more compelling goal and start moving positively toward it.

Just because misfortune affects you doesn't mean it must control you. Get misfortune behind you. Transcend it. Rise above it and move swiftly forward as you surely can.

    Your good fortune
Consider how supremely fortunate you are. You're alive, you're able to think, to act, to make decisions, to make a difference. There are those whom you care about. There are those who care about you. You're experienced, knowledgeable, skilled, curious and resourceful.

With all that going for you, there's no need to be stopped by fear. There's no need to be the least bit insecure. There's no need to be angry, arrogant or deceitful. There's every reason to be confident. There's every reason to move forward.

Sure your life has its shortcomings. Yet those are far outweighed by your blessings and your possibilities. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by stepping confidently forward. You are blessed, you are worthy and you deserve to have the best that life can offer. Use every moment to make that happen.

    Who you are
Who do you think you are? Your perception of yourself becomes reality through the thoughts, decisions and actions of every moment. Are you kind? Are you loving? Are you honest? Are you successful? Are you wealthy? You are when you truly think you are.

Every day a thousand decisions greet you. They overflow with opportunity. They can take you to any place imaginable. How do you choose? How do you decide? You do so based on who you think you are.

What do others think of you? It depends on who you think you are. What will you become? That depends entirely on who you think you will become.

Who do you think you are? It is revealed in every moment, in every action, in every decision, in every thought and opinion. The great thing is that you can be whomever you decide you will be. It is your choice. It is your life. So who do you think you are?

    Rise to the challenges
You can rise to the challenges or you can let them push you down. You can make the best of them, or you can let them get the best of you. It all depends on how you respond. It all depends on how you see yourself.

If you see yourself as a victim, you will be. Life's difficulties will quickly overpower you if you let them. When you see yourself as a participant in life, as an effective and positively focused force, not only will the challenges yield to your involvement, they will serve to make you stronger.

Look at each challenge as an opportunity. What can you learn from it? What can you do with it? How can you bring about something positive because of it?

When faced with a challenge, ask yourself this question. How can I respond to this challenge so that a year from now, looking back at the experience, I'll be overwhelmingly thankful that it came along?

The challenges are there and they will keep on coming. Rise to the challenges. It's a great way to powerfully lift yourself up

    You have what it takes
You have what it takes to be a leader. You have what it takes to be a winner. You have what it takes to be successful. The question is, will you use it? Will you fulfill the enormous potential that is your life, or will you just sit back and watch others doing it?

Will you be the unique, creative, productive person you were meant to be? You already have what it takes. You have the desire. Look deeply enough and you'll find plenty of it. The resources you need are there. Work diligently enough and they will be available to you in abundance. You have the time -- the same 24 hours in each day as everyone else.

You have knowledge, and the ability to learn. You have skills, and the ability to adapt. Yes, you have what it takes, right now, right here, today. If you're looking for opportunity, stop looking. You are the opportunity. You can truly make a difference in your own special way. You have what it takes. Make it count.

    Value in the effort
To desire something without also desiring the effort necessary to create or obtain it is indeed a wasted desire. To get something for nothing is to have nothing but an empty trinket.

The value of anything worth having is in the effort needed to obtain it. The thing itself can be eventually taken away, or it can be depleted, it can break or it can turn to rust. Yet the strength, the experience, the confidence, the wisdom you gain from the effort will always be with you.

When you sincerely look at the things you desire, you'll see that you don't desire those things at all. You desire to be the person who can obtain and maintain those things. As such, it is best to focus not only on the objectives you desire, but also on the efforts which will make them a reality. That's where the real value is.

I'm not typically one to stop my workout to give someone advice in the gym, but I was doing some dumbbell flies and saw a guy really struggling on the bench behind me. I walked over to give him a spot and quickly realized that he had some sort of mental disability. I ended up talking with him for 5-10 minutes and he told me how he dreams about becoming a powerlifter (the dude was benching around 180 for 5 reps and he was pretty small, so not bad) and how he tries to train every day. After spotting him for a few sets and giving him a couple bench press tips, we talked for a few more minutes. I have so much respect for someone who is trying to become the best version of them self despite their past, life situations, or anything else working against them. If you want something bad enough, go out there and get it no matter how badly the odds are stacked against you.

    A positive start
Energize your life by starting each day with gratitude. When you wake up, before you do anything else, stop and count your blessings. Then find something special about each day for which you can be thankful.

It's a great way to get each day started on a positive note, and it can make a major difference throughout the day. Actively practicing gratitude on a regular basis will keep you in touch with the very best of your possibilities. It will enable you to see opportunities and utilize resources which may otherwise have remained hidden or forgotten.

Maintaining an attitude of gratitude will keep you connected to the things of value in your life. So in a very real sense it will add value to each moment of the day.

There are many good things in your life. It makes sense to fully appreciate and enjoy them. When you do, those positive things will grow even stronger. Begin each day by counting your many blessings. By so doing you'll attract many more.

    Obtaining value
For anything worth having, anything of value, there is a price to pay. If there were no price, there would be no value. The price is not arbitrarily imposed on the thing of value. The price is in fact a big part of what gives it the value.

If diamonds were scattered around on the ground everywhere, they would be worth no more than pieces of gravel. The rarity of diamonds, and the resulting price that must be paid to obtain them, are what make them so valuable.

Trying to obtain something of value without paying the price will only lead to frustration and disappointment. Much of the misery in the world today is the result of such misguided quests.

For anything of value, be willing to pay the price. Be grateful and enthusiastic about paying the price. Because without the price to pay, there is nothing of value.

    Value and grow
The things you value are what become valuable in your life. You give value, you create value by your attention, your efforts, your commitment.

Value your work and it becomes more valuable. Value your home and it becomes more valuable. Value your life, your family, your faith, your body, your mind -- and they all become more valuable. Value your ideas and they become more valuable. Value your time and it becomes more valuable. Value your money and it becomes more valuable.

Value is not determined by a price tag. The value of anything is the value you give it. What do you value? What do you want to grow and become abundant in your life? Give yourself to those things that you value and they will certainly flourish.

    Choose your consequences
The answers you find will come from the questions you ask. The things you accomplish will result from the efforts you mount. The places you go will depend on the journeys you undertake. The rewards you enjoy flow from the risks you are willing to accept.

When you control the causes, the effects will be to your liking. What you get from any experience or situation depends primarily on what you put into it. Those who are wise, have made the effort to learn. Those who are wealthy, have made the effort to earn.

Output depends on input. Input depends on you. What you are giving will determine how you are living. You can get whatever you desire by taking the steps that will cause it to happen. Everything you do has a consequence. Use that reality to your advantage. Choose your ideal consequences by carefully choosing your actions.

    Get prepared
There are plenty of great opportunities in this world, and new opportunities come along every day. Making the most of those opportunities requires preparation. Success is not dependent so much on access to opportunity as it is on the amount of preparation that has preceded the opportunity.

Preparation is not usually very exciting. In the short term it can be tedious and uninspiring. Yet is pays off in big ways. When you are prepared, you can make the most of the good times. When you are prepared, you can thrive even in the difficult times.

Tomorrow will come. Are you doing anything today to prepare for it? As the months and years pass by, and they surely will, the preparation you do right now will bring much added value to your life. Do you ever wish you could be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time? With enough preparation, you can surely and reliably put yourself exactly there.

    Excellence is a daily endeavor
What can you do today that will make the most difference tomorrow? What can you do today that will improve your performance over yesterday?

What can you do today that will have the biggest positive impact on the most people? What can you do today that is above and beyond what's expected of you?

What can you do today that will help you grow? What new things can you learn? What can you do to apply the lessons you've already learned?

Excellence comes not from platitudes and good intentions, but rather from days and moments lived with the sincere and committed effort to be your best.

    Being impressive

You don’t have to act impressive to be impressive. You just have to be you.

And in any case, being impressive is not what matters. What matters is living the life you choose, and finding true fulfillment in doing so.

If you’re constantly worried about how you appear to others, you won’t appear in a very good light. It’s ridiculously easy to let go of that worry when you remind yourself how useless and counterproductive it really is.

Give yourself permission to enjoy the moment you’re in. Challenge yourself to share that joy, and wonder, and love, and enthusiasm, with as many people as possible, in your own special way.

What other people think of you, or of anything else, is their business. Your business is to give rich expression to the unique beauty of life that is within you.

Go beyond striving to appear this way or that. Put your thoughts, energy and passion into authentic living, and add real joy and substance to every moment.

    Know it is possible
Knowing that something is possible is a significant step toward achieving it. As soon as you know, without a doubt, that you can achieve it, in many ways you immediately begin to benefit from it.

Of course achievement requires more than just knowing you can do it. You must actually take the steps which will make it happen. However, those efforts come much more readily when you know that they will surely lead where you desire to go.

Look at all the things others have achieved. Consider everything you have already accomplished. Know that what you desire is possible. Convince yourself of it. See yourself living it in every detail. Fully and sincerely expect it, and you're well on the way to having it.

    Make it yours

Don't wait for someone to give you permission to succeed and achieve. Get yourself busy and do it. Don't wait for someone to tell you how to do it. Take it upon yourself to figure it out. Don't wait for just the right situation. Don't count on being lucky. Do what it takes to make your own good fortune.

Learn from others. Seek the advice, input and feedback of those whose opinions you respect. But don't depend on anyone or anything to do it for you. Make the best of fortunate situations, but don't depend on luck or chance.

Depend on those things over which you have the most direct control -- your own thoughts and actions, your ability to make the choices which will lead to precisely where you have decided to go.

Your destiny is in your hands. Think like it and act like it with each passing moment. Take hold of that destiny and make it the best it can possibly be.

    Unconditional living
Does what you're doing need to play any role in how you feel? What if you could be filled with joy no matter what the situation, no matter what you were doing? Is that really possible?

Of course it is. Your capacity for joy is not dependent on any particular situation, activity or outcome. Certainly there are conditions and results which you desire. Yet they do not make you or break you as a person.

The essential joy of your living existence is unconditional and all encompassing. You can rise above the fray, you can detach yourself from mere circumstances. And when you do there is a blessed freedom which gives power, focus and effectiveness to all you do.

Don't ignore reality or run away from it. Simply transcend it. You are more than your circumstances. You are more than your problems, more than your possessions, more than your burdens. To the extent that you allow your spirit to rise above your circumstances, you're able to make the very best of them no matter what they may be.

    Simple or easy?
There's a big difference between simple answers and easy answers. Simple answers are usually powerful and effective, yet challenging. Easy answers are usually appealing, but not very effective, and can even be dangerous.

Let's say you need to lose weight. The simple answer is -- get more regular exercise and eat a more nutritionally balanced diet. That's simple enough, and though often difficult to follow, usually effective. The easy answer is -- take this pill and eat anything you want. Very appealing, but it probably won't work.

You can spot an easy answer because it is something you want to hear. Even though it may not make much sense, if you want to hear it badly enough you can make yourself believe it. You can spot simple answers because they seem so obvious, even though they may be a bit challenging.

When there's a simple answer and an easy answer, the best choice is almost always the simple answer. It may not be what you want to hear, but it is probably what you need to do.
