Obama secretly ends program that let pilots carry guns (serious)
After the September 11 attacks, commercial airline pilots were allowed to carry guns if they completed a federal-safety program. No longer would unarmed pilots be defenseless as remorseless hijackers seized control of aircraft and rammed them into buildings.
Now President Obama is quietly ending the federal firearms program, risking public safety on airlines in the name of an anti-gun ideology.
The Obama administration this past week diverted some $2 million from the pilot training program to hire more supervisory staff, who will engage in field inspections of pilots.
This looks like completely unnecessary harassment of the pilots. The 12,000 Federal Flight Deck Officers, the pilots who have been approved to carry guns, are reported to have the best behavior of any federal law enforcement agency. There are no cases where any of them has improperly brandished or used a gun.

Exactly i flly 2-3 times a year to italy and then back to texas. This is just going to compromise the overall safety of the passengers!
I mean with a gun the pilot could have had a chance to barricade himself inside his cabin and have enough time to land the plane and receive help from the ground...
Discuss.

I'm all for guns, but....
if you shoot a bullet through the wall of an airplane cabin at 30k feet, wouldn't that cause some problems?
Sure, pilots need protection, but guns on airplanes? I say give them high powered tasers or something.

We have to worry about pilots using those guns to hijack their own planes

Why not let passengers carry guns, for that matter? Then the whole plane would be a anti-hijack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

it'd fry the system and the plane would still go down.

No. Planes typically leak quite a bit of air through the cabin during a normal flight, it's not like the movies.
What do you think Federal Air Marshall's carry? Squirt guns?

They carry stun guns. This is what i have found.
Or they could use low powered ammos or non lethal bullets.

Oh yes, let's let people carry guns in airplanes. I mean tiny holes on the plane wouldn't do much but kill everyone, would it?

Actually it makes sense.
Have you checked out the death ratio of guns in America compared to other countries. It's something like 9000 times higher?
And an Air marshal is going to kick the **** out of someone starting **** anyway.

I think they did some testing on this before, with the idea of plain clothes "US Marshalls" on the plane. They used low velocity/low weight rounds which would not penetrate the skin of the aircraft, yet still disable an attacker.

Yeah gee, how will they fly now? Nobody ever flew a plane before they had guns on them, what a shame, it's literally impossible to fly planes now! Damn!

I didn't vote for the guy, but just hold on before we go nuts, this is an editorial. Not a news story, yes there was a redistribution of funds, but it doesn't necessarily mean he outlawed it. Planes delivering US mail still require armed personnel on board, so there is a loop hole that can be exploited if it really requires it. Just my 2 cents...

Haven't you seen the movies? Just cover the hole with a plastic food tray!
Honestly though... pilots SHOULD be carrying guns. It doesn't hurt.

Guns do more harm in the cockpit then good. A bullet going through the cabin at 35,000 feet could be a catastrophe.
Just fortify the cockpit doors and problems solved (haven't they already done that)
