Missing shielding

I have a lat pulldown with stack on my power rack, but the cable is missing part of the shielding.

What do you do about that? When happens at the gym (I guess I could ask them), do they get a new cable, or can you fix the one you have?

Are you just talking about the plastic sheathing? I don't think there is much you can do about fixing that if its broke. If the cable isn't damaged, you can still use it for awhile, but the comfort of the machine will be sacrificed and the cable could wear on the pulleys.

I believe aircraft grade cable is what is used, but there has been some discussion about using sheathed cable from Lowes/Home Depot. Someone around here said the stuff made for these (aircraft grade) has less tendency to stretch and retains its shape. Personally, I'd try some of the hardware store variety first, as its strong enough you won't get hurt and its much, much cheaper.
