maybe 6-8 weeks ago someone went thru my car. They only got the change out of the center console. One of my doors is broken and it wont lock. They had went thru the glovebox etc. Didnt take my checkbook. They went under the passenger seat but luckily didnt find what was under the drivers seat (which isnt under there now)
I have always been pretty casual about not locking doors and also about leaving stuff under the seats or even leaving my wallet in the car etc. Never had issues until now.
So I figured there was no need to call the cops. Well, it just happened again last night. This time he got a little hand held microcassette recorder from under my drivers seat.
Obviously some little neighborhood punk &^tch crackhead type. Im pretty sure he is walking several blocks to get here because this neighborhood is mainly old/retired folks.
After noticing someone had been in my car again I saw something laying over in the grass. A cell phone and belt clip. I figure he stole it and then just threw it away.
There is another car about 50 feet away and the window is down and the back hatch window open and some stuff is laying on the ground..which is wierd because it was raining yesterday, last night and today, so I figure the same dude went thru that car and the owner hasnt noticed yet.
So besides calling the cops, what can be done to stop this?
Obviously I can get my locks fixed, but that doesnt stop this prick in his tracks. Any practical ideas?
thoughts that float thru ones mind.
1) video surveillance? but how?
2) go ninja, lay out in the woods nearby at night, let him sit in the car and then...hehe
3) put a big nasty rat trap under the seat to show him love....of course then the coward would vandalize the car etc
Any ideas?

I had a problem with some teens doing this to the neighborhood cars. A few of ou got together and set up some watches till we finally caught them. There were two of them and basically we caught one. He got roughed up a bit, and then we got ahold of his parents and we never saw them again. I was always worried about retaliation, but never happened.
I would try the ninja thing and see if you can catch him in the act, then do as you see fit when you catch him.

The best thing is call the police any time something like that happens. If they get enough calls from the same area they will at the very least let the patrol officers know what is going on and they can spend more time in the area. The good /bad news is that after a few break ins the thief gets caught or just moves on to a new area.

one night leave your car doors unlocked preferably a weekend.then take a big spot light and shine it on the car.put a sign in the window saying "door unlockedW" get your SKS and find a nice camoflauged spot.Whistle and say "here chicky, chicky" well you can figure the rest.......probably kids....thrill crimes....but wood's correct call police each and everytime.Lock your doors.I live in a nice neighbor hood and we got some minor crap going on,nothin to serious but its teenage kids i know it.

The picture route is good to take, if you don't feel like staking out the car yourself. Definitely should call the cops and file a report.
Don't set up any traps, not only because of potential lawsuits but also, the perp is probably a minor. If that was a handgun under your driver's seat, it indicates someone young and scared of possessing it.

somehow I dont get "young and scared" from someone stalking my car. maybe young and dumb
The rat trap or even an electric fence would get you in more trouble than the punk would get into.

When McDonalds opened what they considered a full meal, for an adult, is now sold, with a toy that does not pose a choking hazard to children under three!!!
we had our car burglarized years ago, now I just take all my valuables out when we get home. Go ahead, steal my ice scraper and insurance card, I won't lose any sleep over it.
If you already got your car broken into once, then why would you leave ANYTHING in there that the thief could steal? Seriously, just remove anything of value, and even if he gets into your car again, it won't be a big deal.
Calling the cops is basically useless. I had my car broken into twice in the last 6 months. First time, they smashed the window and tried to steal the stereo. All they got was the face plate, they couldn't get the stereo out. Funny, because I had $200 sitting in the glove box, and the thief must have not opened it because all the money was still there! Anyway, I called the cops, and basically got "yup, that sucks", and the cop drove off.
A few weeks later, somebody jammed a screwdriver into the door lock trying to get into my car. They were unsuccessful, but totally ****ed up the lock. I have to go in through the passenger side now. Royal pain in the ass.
I'll second that. They stole our cell phone and made a bunch of calls, I went online and grabbed the numbers they called and printed them out for the police. All they had to do was call and ask "who called you at this time?" Case closed. Did they? Hell no.
The absolutely cheapest and one of the best crime deterrents is light, lots and lots of light. Porch lights and lights in your back yard, motion sensing is an option if you don't want to leave them on all night. If your entire block is lit up like daylight nobody will come there...
You could also take everything of value out of your car and leave your doors unlocked (may save you a window).
I am a cop, and I'll agree that they won't do much unless it becomes a big problem; a "team" then may be assigned to work the case with surveillance and so on. I would try to video them somehow, or get together with neighbors and do the "stakeout" thing that was suggested above. Even if you just get video, chances are that they are some "known locals" that the cops will easily recognize. The same folks tend to pop up over and over with stuff like this. Sounds like teens to me.
There was a guy up here that had his crazy redneck buddy sleep in his shop because it kept getting broken into. They actually showed up when he was in there but he was so surprised they got away.
