    Lying Tricep Extension: Ineffective?

With skullcrushers, you lock your elbows in place, and fully contract the Tris and bring the weight to your head

But with Lying Tricep Extensions, you move the weight behind your head. As a result, you're moving your entire shoulder as well.... isn't that ineffective? You're moving your shoulders as well instead of isolating the triceps.

Many keep their arms locked in the arms back position.

Also keep in mind that the long head is involved in shoulder extension too.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

It does take some of the isolation out of it by adding other muscle groups but as long as your using good technique and giving the muscle a good squeeze during the motion it can be used effectively. Just try not to let your elbows move too far towards the top of your head or youll be adding in the chest muscles too. Kinda like a lying dumbell pullover hits the chest.

If you maintain upper arm position, and keep your elbows locked in place throughout the exercise, it should still be effective in targeting the triceps.

I do it like this, minus the head over the bench, and it is an awesome exercise. By not stopping over the head, the muscle tension is always there.

I've seen a lotta Arnold videos and he seems to do the first, with the X on it. Maybe it's kinda like a cheat curl... he probably tries to use more weight.

    thank you PHil, as always.....

people just have to get it into their heads that form is a MEANS TO AN END... and sometimes, you have to "loosen" "strict" form to fit your body or to relieve stress on a tendon or joint......

and that is what lying extensions do.....yes, think of them, in a sense, as a cheat curl for the triceps.....

and they are VERY effective.....and much safer than strict skulls which have ruined many an elbow......

yes, those pictures ARE french presses, and I strongly recommend using a cambered curling bar when doing those.....

french presses are MUCH kinder to the elbows than doing single DB seated presses behind the neck....

Aha....that's probably why he he such ****ty tris then.

BTW, I though a french press was perfomed lying down and was a cross between the exercise in phil's diagram and a bench press.

I'm a fan of the lying extension. As mentioned, it's easier on the elbow. The key is not to move your elbows forward when doing them, maximizing use of the triceps.
