There seem to be a bunch of average, non-professional shmos on these boards (including myself) who have been working out but haven't exactly gotten it right...until they started either training with a trainer or started reading these boards.
Now for these people, doesn't it make sense to start with a strength routine?
It would seem to make sense to me to lay the strength foundation first with your basic compounds. Then, once you have the foundation in place you start pumping in the blanks with some hypertrophy routines.
No?
I say this because for most of my life I've been focused on hypertrophy and higher volume sets/reps. I think this has been a big mistake based on my body's early response to a 5 x 5 program.
Would be curious if I'm off base here...because I often see folks recommending hypertrophy type routines to others when maybe they shouldn't.

Re:
Hypertrophy specific training (HST) is an approach to strength training that has recently generated a lot of excitement among professional trainers. Strength Training comes in more than one flavor depending on the goal: endurance, size, strength, and power. Hypertrophy specific training aims specifically to build muscle size (hypertrophy).

Thick,
Would you add the body part volume at the point where you start to hit the wall with the basic full body workout?
I'm in my second week of 5 x 5 and I'm thinking I have a ways to go before I hit the wall, but I've also seen versions of this routine where you select isolations in rep ranges 8 - 12.
