Have a sports authority 300# barbell set that came with spring collars. For the life of me, I have to struggle a good 3 mins just to get these suckers off and back on and almost fully exhaust my forearms and grip in the process. Problem is, these clips have to be fully closed to get around and slide up the barbell and it takes a large amount of force to close them.
My grip strength isn't great, but I can close a captains of crush #4, so I suspect maybe getting a better quality set of spring grips would solve this or is my grip strength just that poor?

I have a whole box of those clips and never use them. The only time I clip is when setting a new rm at squats. I dont wont to think about anything side to side, I just want to get it done.
Dont stress over it.
And if there is any question, the answer is yes, I am telling you to ignore safety equipment for the sake of covenience."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

What I need to do is basically grip the collar with one hand to the point where the two short metal grips touch while forcing the collar off with the other hand using lots of exertion and some twisting around the numerous screw grooves. It's shocking these collars would ship with this bar unless sports authority subbed them.
Anyways, for the threaded bar- would either of these be a problem?

I have this same bar. It came with my Sports Authority weights. It currently resides in the corner of my garage. It does have the ribs and he is not kidding when he says the clips are stiff. I couldn't believe how much effort it took to to close them. No F'n kidding. You could use them as grip trainers. Most spring clips are pretty easy to squeeze and just slide them on. These are crazy stiff. If I ever use that bar, I will get some decent spring clips or some clamps.
