My goal is to reach the NFL.
I'm serious, I know it's a dream for some people, but I have the heart. I know I can push myself to do whatever I have to. For that reason I'm giving up lifting for a few months up until Football camp at my High School. It will be my first year in Football. I'm going to start running down, and down hills for strength, endurance, and speed. Just like Walter Payton. I know I may not start my first season, but I'm determined to start soon. Wish me luck, and if you have any tips before it's too late thanks.

Well you have the sane drean as 20,000 million other athletes. First. let me mention genetics does play a large role, however the "high motor" characteristic can often ecplise natural born talent. Seondly, you have to get yourself known. You will be walking on at college if you depend on our coaches. Get your mom/dad to tape you and zoom a little bit on your position. From here, if you are good enough put it on youtube. Eventually word will spead around regionaly. Also participate in as many combines as possible. Coaches often make their first judments off of pure athletic ability, here.
Bulking to 230 to play defensive end at texas tech.

this
the game itself is simple really. you could teach the basics to anyone, i've seen people with mental disorders being able to run with the ball and avoid tacklers.
unfortunately you can't teach people genetics.

Admirin my stack?
I wish I was as avid a lifter as I am now, coaches loved me, started every year...but was lazy as **** and never lifted...just went off raw talent. God I was a stupid ****. Oh well...now I plan to COACH and I def will not tolerate laziness :P
You also cant teach stupid...we had a kid 6'4 like 260-280 that played DT but couldnt for the life of him learn how to push off the OL to find the ball...he would just charge into them and try to muscle his way through. I ended up seeing him on highlights my freshman year as they ran a draw right in the B gap he was suppose to be in but he blew right pass it instead of pushing off and finding the ball.

i say good luck
but don't give up lifting, thats one element to your game that you NEEEED.
you can run a 4.3 fourty (if genetics allows) and have lance armstrong's lungs, but you won't do sh*t if you can't break a tackle or make a tackle.
strength is important, veryyyy important

I read more than I post
i don't understand how giving up lifting is in any way going to help you reach the nfl

Yeah don't give up lifting. I would also look into any programs for athlete development, like in Indy where I'm from St. Vincent's has a sports specific training program for youth. Don't worry about the genetics, just work your butt off. Look at Darren Sproles, the kid is like 5'6, but he's one of the best backs in the league.

Not if you think not lifting is a good idea. At 160 you should be bulking, not cutting.
Nothing to see here, move along please

You need to worry about gettin on the field at the high school level...you must be pretty hard headed to believe that without weight training ur gonna make urself a better football...im pretty sure your not a troy polamalu who does not weight train and focuses on all plyometrics...running up and down hills will make you a good runner and put you in great shape but with modern strength and conditioning weight training is so sport specfic...movements on the field are almost perfectly mimicked in the weightroom...if you wanna get to the nfl you better open your head up to constructive criticism...and rememeber....99 percent of collegiate athletes will never make it in the big leagues...you got 8 years before you can even worry about that
All it takes is all you've got

Man what you need to be doing is building some muscle, not cutting because coaches recognize size which will be your first step to playing varsity and your first step to your dream. You already have good strength numbers so that definitely helps but you want to get bigger and make sure that you're taking in a good amount of calories and vitamins to make sure you grow to your genetic max. Pick up Susan Kleiner's book Power Eating, and follow everything she says. You also want to try and get your bench to about 250 and your squat to 400 as quickly as possible and focus on speed and explosiveness in your junior and senior year. So keep lifting and make speed training your second priority right now. Add in 3 speed workouts a week, just do about 15 minutes of work at the end of your lifting. Two days a week (on upper body days) work on your maximum speed with short sprints, and 1 day a week, (a day you aren't lifting maybe) work on medium distance like 400m, 800m, and work on good running form, high knees, 90 degree arms moving straight back and forth. Make your workouts intense and always push your strength. I'm happy to help if you have more questions.

If you want to play in the NFL, focus on smaller goals. For now try and start in high school, varsity if you're good enough, sophomore year if you're not on varsity already make that your goal, junior year try and lead the league in touchdowns or something. Your goal now should be doing well enough in high school football, then if you make it to college focus on being a successful college player and so on.

Odds say small chance. Good luck, though. Don't give up, and remember the journey's as important as the goal (wow that was corny)

Look, what ever you want to do put your heart into it, do what ever you would love to do and never give up. And if someday you never could of made it, DO NOT PUT IT ON YOURSELF!
You will work hard enough. I mean, many of these people in the NFL and very very very lucky to actually be there. There are 300 million people in the U.S, and hundreds of them are in NFL. That is a low percent chance of anyone actually being in NFL, but you can still work hard.
Like I said, if you never make it, do not feel sad. At least you have some heart and determination, and not letting two pitbulls fight to the death.

Good luck bro, I have big dreams too and I want to encourage you. Never know what you can be unless you try.
Wish I'd started football younger (before 9th grade) so I'd have more developed talent than just raw talent.

I would listen NB01 don't let genetics talk scare you, worry about making yourself the best football player you can. That means when everyone is hanging out or is partying you are watching tapes, lifting, EATING, plyometrics, sprinting, studying football and talking to your coach. I will never tell someone they cant reach there dream but for you to do this it has to become YOUR LIFE.
1.)Keep lifting full body workouts concentrate on squat bench and pull-up(maybe weighted) military press and other compound movements and core, your lower back can never be to strong.
2.) EAT EAT EAT you are gonna want to gain mass lean proteins and carbs(since your in high school double up on school lunches.) your coach and your team will respect your size and mass a lot.
3.) Like NB01 was saying you want to focus on your lifting stats set a goal to be benching 275 and squatting 350 to 400 and then you want to work on your speed(track and lifting on off season). plyometrics, and sprinting.
4.)Also get your parents to tape your games not just for college footage but to analyze mistakes and improve.
It's a lot i know but it's a big dream so train harder and DON'T STOP LIFTING.
-
Ionlyfearme
also DON'T CUT BULK BULK BULK until you are over 200 this process will take at least the first two years of high school but at least if you train hard you will have fun F*&%ing kids up on the field.
