The other day I farted, and the instant the fart left my hole, I smelled it. (And no my head wasn't anywhere near it.) I didn't realize farts could travel at such an alarming speed.
Although on separate occasions, it can take up to 5 - 10 seconds for a fart to be smelled. Sometimes even 30 + seconds.

if there is no current smell in the air, then farts will travel faster as they will fill up the air. If there is already strong smells in the air, then the air will not be able to hold as much gas. Also, if the air was already traveling in a particular direction, and the river of air catches the gas, the gas will go up with the air which can be pretty fast. Also, if you have a strong anus, it can push the gas out causing it to accelerate at very high speeds.
