There is no set time scale as to when to take a week off. Listen to your body you will learn when it needs a break. If you feel tired/ run down and haven't had one for a while take a week off it will do you no harm. In fact you will come back refreshed and probably stronger.

Personally I always come back weaker from time off, especially on the more gruelling lifts eg pull ups. Save them for when you have an injury or have an otherwise busy schedule. Don't take time off the sake of it. If you are feeling tired or losing enthusiasm just put an extra rest day in your schedule.

Personally I aim at around 8 weeks. You should take a week off when your gains starts to plateau and you feel tired/overtrained in the gym. It's good to do this to allow your body to recover and prevent injury.
Some guys like to "Deload" every 8 weeks or so as well. Go through your normal routine, but do about 60% of the weight that you normally do. Concentrate on form and getting a pump going.
Either option is beneficial to you. Experiment to see what works for you.

x2
although i usually plan to do something different about every 8-10 just to mix it up as i get bored doing the exact same routine for months on end but i usually allways have forced weeks off due to injury or illness, i think they are good i allways feel better after them. currently on a 10day break or sumit and i think its been 3weeks since i heavy squated and thats starting to feel like an age and to long as i did a reps week and the got ill, so i'm def not planing weeks off again.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"
if your family was captured and you were told you needed to put 100 pounds onto your max squat within two months or your family would be executed, would you squat once per week? Something tells me that you'd start squatting every day
