I've always enjoyed essays and short stories more than novels.
Essay: "The Law of Acceleration," by Henry Adams
http://www.bartleby.com/159/34.html
Short Story: "Hills like White Elephants," by Ernest Hemingway

orson scott card, its scifi.
Set in Earth's future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind who have barely survived two conflicts with the Formics (an insectoid alien race also known as the "Buggers"). In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world's most talented children, including the novel's protagonist Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender's tactical genius is revealed.
Reception to the book was generally positive, though some critics have denounced Card's perceived justification of his main character's violent actions. Ender's Game won the 1985 Nebula Award for best novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for best novel. Its sequels, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind, A War of Gifts, and Ender in Exile, follow Ender's subsequent travels to many different worlds in the galaxy. "Ender's Game" has been adapted into two comic series and is planned for a video game.
what are some of your favorites?

I never knew Forrest Gump was based on a book and it's one of my favorite movies haha... I'm going to have to pick this up
So far my favorite is probably Needful Things by Stephen King (pretty much only read stephen king if I do pick up a book thats not a textbook which is like once every 3 years lately)

To Reign in Hell - Steven Brust
It's his interpretation and version of the revolt in Heaven. Paradise Lost never really gets into detail about the actual war.
Love the characters, the action, and his portrayal of both sides. No one is essentially wrong. And you can easily see yourself supporting one side or the other.
I've read it on numerous occasions.

LOL - Yeah the book is awesome.
For Stephen King I would have to give a nod to The Shining or Salem's Lot. Both awesome books.

I think my favorite is Count of Monte Cristo.
Close 2nd is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. They made a movie about it "Simon Birch" but butchered the hell out of the book. I highly recommend reading Irving. He's a twisted f*ck but his books are very interesting and entertaining. Some of his books are way out there like A Son of a Circus - involving midgets, tranny serial killers, detectives and bunch of other bizarre stuff.
Also a big fan of LOTR, Enders Game series tho original is the best, Vampire Chronicles, Sphere and yes the Dan Brown books.
