Dicks sporting goods has a 300lb set for about $170 or 180. That's about as cheap as your getting new.
On craigs I've seen them go from $50 to $125, you just have to be patient or throw a wanted ad on there.
Best way is to buy an assortment of stuff, pull the weights you want out and sell everything else. You have to get a bargain on everthing else, but you'll get the weights for free. I've put 1400 lbs in my basement that way.
Obviously the ability to do that depends on your schedule.

A few years ago, I picked up a 300# olympic set at dick's for $99. That being said, the best place to get stuff is used, b/c alot of people start, then quit, and they usually get rid of the stuff cheap--if not free.

Yea, I know you can occasionally get them on sale, but generally speaking you're gonna be around $170 for the cheapest set available. Sometimes Dicks runs coupons and things that get the price down, but the OP didn't really say how fast he wanted to get the weights. I'm thinking if he's interested in waiting for a sale.......it'd be better to wait for a bargain on Craigslist.

That type of bar is pretty much the standard for these weight sets. Not much to do about it. In that price range you're still only paying 60 to 70 cents a pound for new weights if you don't count the value of the bar. Its not a great price, but the plates will last forever so it'll do. I still say Craigslist is the best place, but some people want to get the weights right now and get into it. Can't blame them, first time I bought equipment I didn't have CL available, but I probably wouldn't have wanted to wait either.

I bought a 300lb Olympic set at Sports Authority. They were on sale for $159 and I had the $25 off any purchase over $100 coupon from the newspaper ad. So, $135 for the set. The bar is cheap but the plates are fine. They are grip plates and have a nice finish that I have not been able to chip yet.
