Cant remember exactly at least a month before even trying to get back in the gym with low weight. I would say no less than 3 months to be back to anything remotely heavy. Dont skip out on physical therapy even when it feels pointless, in the long run it helps. I lost around 20 pounds by the time I was ready to start lifting again but, it comes back pretty fast. Good luck and dont push too hard too fast. After a few months I was back to normal and at 9 months post op the doc cleared me for military service.

My doctor said it would be 9 months before I could start lifting again, but how long for most of you did this take. Also, how long before your arm was somewhat functional just doing daily activies?

I have asked this question multiple times and I dont think i recieved an answer. For those who have done the labrum surgery, do you still experience the grinding/clicking sensation in the injured shoulder??? Are you able to lift as heavy as you were in the past????

    Thanks.

That will obviously vary alot on the individual. I had that going on for about 8-9 months but I rehabbed it to a point where I don't have any issues with that. This is before the surgery.

As for lifting as heavy, also varies alot. Some seem to be stronger(although not sure how strong they were before the injury). Overall, it seems to get most close to 90% if they take the time and rehab it properly I would say.

I dislocated my right shoulder playing rugby 5 weeks ago today. Have just started back in the gym doing light weight high reps. No real pain, but I think I was more nervous than anything in case it popped back out again.

I've got a doctors appointment this week to get an MRI scan to check if I've torn anything. Does anyone think its likely I have since I can do light weight without it hurting? I've been careful not to do any wide grip or dips or anything that could redislocate it.

This forum has been an absolute Godsend for me since I did this, its a really frustrating injury and it makes it easier knowing there are others going through the same frustration as me at the moment

I had surger in june of 08 and it felt a lot better right after the rehab. i have been building a house so I didnt really work it like i should have. Really i guess i babied it so now its very tight again with pain. I think the stretching is the best thing to do. It will be VERY tight after the surgery. Start lifting light and continue to gain.

You'll know when the shoulder isnt stable. It just feels like it wants to pop out, and i'm sure you know what a joint about to pop out feels like. It just structurally doesn't feel right, and has a slight 'weak' feeling to it. Torn labrums suck.

    past 2 years.

Two years ago My shoulder dislocated about five time in a six month period.
I took about 3 months of heavy lifting off.
MRI showed there was a Labrum Tear.
Since then i have done the resistance band training with 100% focus.
My shoulder has not came out since but there is chance that it can happen.
I am stronger now than I was before any dislocations.
I have put on about 7 lbs of muscle.
    I can still lift heavy.
I avoid exercises: clean pull, rack pull, and military press.
    Upright rows are awkward.
Recovery time on the shoulder itself is slower than it was before.
I am not suggesting that anyone takes this route.
IF you do, you will need QUALITY REST and focus on your FORM!
Surgery is always still an option for me.
    Good luck to everyone.
    Peace.

I've had a SLAP(superior labrum, anterior to posterior) tear due to a motorcycle accident. Accident was in Oct. 2007. Tried PT but that didn't work so I had surgery in Feb. 2008. Not too sure but I think I started PT 3-4 weeks post-surgery. I was in the sling for about 5-6wks. I was doing PT twice a week. After four months I was back in the gym, started with bands for about 2 weeks then moved to weights, light weight high reps. I gradually started to lift heavier and once the 6 month mark passed the surgeon said I could pretty much do what I want in the gym. He said that I would be fully recovered in 12 months. Right now its been about 14 months since surgery and I can lift as heavy as before but certain exercises I won't do or I will be extra carefull when going heavy. Bench Press with a barbell is something I still haven't done. I do dumbbell bench press fine and have been able to go as heavy as I can. Military presses is a exercise I do with caution. Certain variations of the military press can put a little more strain on it than others, example: single arm standing dumbbell press compared to seated double arm dumbbell press. Another than that I'm fully healed and can rotate my arm perfectly which before surgery I could not do. Also have no clicking or catching in the shoulder. No pain either.

After surgery its a long road to recovery but once you get there you will be glad you had the surgery.

forgot to mention another exercise which was stressful 6 months out from surgery. the SQUAT, mainly b/c of the position it puts your arms in. it would cause a little pain and discomfort. even now I would be cautious doing heavy single arm snatches.

For people who had surgery, how long did it take until you could lift objects less than 50 pounds up to shoulder height and be comfortable doing daily activities.

Same here. Having surgery for this on 4/9.
Bummed about not being able to lift for a while but thrilled to get the issue fixed up.
    I'll report back after surgery.

It's awesome to see you have the right attitude, just don't rush into exercises too quickly. Good luck.

I guess each case is different, but i've heard in the ballpark of 2-3 months before light weights are able to be utilized.

I couldn't do any pressing exercise for 9 months. At 4 months it was still very swollen.

Now at 11 months and about 2 months of training, I close grip benched 120kg for 9 reps. Still is nowhere near what it was pre-injury though.

So I will still go ahead with the surgery in 3 weeks.

After the injury I couldn't press for 9 months(just lots of rest, then rehab etc). No surgery. You stated it has only been 4 months for you since pressing.

Now at 11 months I'm back to where I stated in pressing.

However, it's still nowhere near what it was, and doubt it will improve much more from here. I also fear doing further damage to the joint by lifting heavy.

So I have still opted for the surgery.
