Yes, yes it is.
The only people who are able to bench 300 x 5 at 200 lbs while being a high level athlete are football players and strength athletes.
Flat bench isnt as useless as most people claim it is great for triceps and rotator cuff strength and it can help you put on mass, but Not even Hughes and GSP can do 300 5 times. MAYBE alves.

first of all, while i never saw Matt do it, I worked out at the same gym as him in Bettendorf, and everyone said he could hit 405x1

btw i hit 385x1 @ 185 and I'm neither a high level athlete nor a strength athlete...just a regular gym rat. 300+ benching is not that hard for someone who works out.

Hughes? He said himself when he still lifted bench for max strength he could hit 350. Then he changed his training around and I bet now its around 280-300. And he is one of the stronger guys in the division and the kind of guy that you would figure to do flat bench press.

You just hit the nail on the head though, that is my point. High level athletes dont have time to get there bench up over 300 lbs. Maybe the LHWs and HWs because at thier size it is less effort. It is hard when you have to worry about technique and 15 other athletic qualities other than strength. Not to mention flat bench is probly low down the list even for strength training for most athletes.

The ability to bench according to your weight also goes down the heavier you get. When Brock Lesnar walks around at 280, he would have to be able to bench 420 lbs for 5+ reps to meet these standards. He's strong as f*ck, but I doubt even he can do that much.... let alone someone who is around that weight and not nearly the same freakish athlete.

Not much. They don't train like bodybuilders and go for 1rmaxes, it's all about low weight high intensity and volume. Arlovski used to be a bodybuilder years ago though

a middle weight can most likely bench 275+
these guys are athletes, and athletes are usually good all around in any type of sport.

people bash on isolation type exercises like its the worst thing in the world for MMA. i remember Josh Barnett, however, saying that these sorts of exercises are definitely beneficial.

Quoted for truth
Quoted for lulz.
But in all honesty bench pressing is such a technique oriented movement, that most elite lifters make gains due to CNS development and coordination. While someone might be a strong individual, if they do not train the bench press in a manner to IMPROVE their bench press it shouldn't be expected that they would be pushing extraordinary numbers.
Having trained as a power lifter and avid Oly and BBer for a few years I can move much more weight in some movements then people who are actually stronger then I am.The best Weightlifting forum on the web:
