After I lost my job, I went into a deep funk. I skipped the gym for a month, ate horribly - fried chicken, cookies, candies, etc. However, I did eat sensibly here and there and continued drinking protein shakes because I knew I shouldn't TOTALLY trash my body. My muscles have gone soft and my weight dropped from 201 lbs. to 191 lbs.
I still don't have a job but I realize that being in a funk is not going to change the outcome. So today, I'm getting back into the program.
However, I am now on a STRICT budget, I can't afford to eat 7-8 times a day. I thought that maybe I should scale back and be lean and muscular instead. If anyone is going through the same thing I am or if anyone has any advice for me, please let me know how to build muscles without breaking the bank.
For those of you who left comments on my board, I apologize for not replying sooner but I kept away from BB.com because my heart wasn't in the sport. I do appreciate very much for your concern and support. (In hindsight, I should have been more open to y'all earlier and gotten the kick in the ass from y'all sooner than now but then again, it's better now than never, right?!)
To those of you out there without jobs, HANG IN THERE. We're all in the same boat. Just lose the funk and keep the faith. It's the only way to keep going.
Thanks!

I feel for ya man.....I was unemployed in November 2008. If you can stomach canned chicken and tuna, that the cheapest protein I know of. I eat a 12.5 oz can of chicken with a frozen entree everyday for meal #4. You can also get frozen chicken breasts in bulk at a reasonable price. You could also get a buddy or two to go in on a side of beef with you. Other than that, it's pretty hard to do on a shoestring budget.
Good luck with the job search!

Glad to hear jocdat that you are pulling yourself out of the funk. Losing a job suck, to that there is no doubt. Keeping yourself healthy will help you get through this time. There are plenty of us here to lean on if you need us.
Good luck in the job hunt.
It almost seems for the cost that 90/10 ground beef which is like $2.99/lb at Sams Club would be better at least for me since I freaking hate tuna.
When I need to eat cheap I make up a batch of Quinoa bought in bulk ($2.99/lb at whole foods) with brown rice(I think $1.99/lb) also bought in bulk and a few pounds of hamburger with whatever seasonings I feel like.
For about $5 I have 10 meals or so loaded with healthy carbs and protein. Granted it's quite a bit fattier than tuna, but is that really that much fat to worry about?
Good luck man with getting back in the swing of things and hope you find a new job soon. I was out of a job for a week not too long ago and I was stressed as hell. Can't imagine I'd be sane still if it had drug on much longer than that....
Welcome back!
God does indeed provide. All we have to do is have faith in Him.
Keep fighting the good fight!

Yo Joc!! Sorry to hear about your job loss,..email me on your credentials,..I'll see what I can do. In the mean time I'll do what I can to help ya with your training goals! We are here for you brother,...let me know if I can help in any way.
The determination you show in the gym will really help you in your job hunt. It will keep the smell of failure off of you when you are going into interviews. Looking like you are fundamentally a solid guy with a small unemployment problem is really important!
I ran across this gem. Video from a 91 year old lady describing how her family ate during the Great Depression. She rocks!
At about the 5 minute mark she talked about "cooking in the pan" as a way to save gas, and thereby saving money. There are a ton of small ways to save money to put towards healthy food. I personally need to eat my veggies instead of letting them get rotten in my veggie drawer.

Welcome back man. Did you at least enjoy any of the Mardi Gras celebrations? I'm from Slidell and all my buddies wanted me to come down and party. I just couldn't get away this year.
It's tough doing this lifestyle on a budget. I'm on a tight one as well. I really do have to plan things out.
One thing is to definitely watch the ads. Stores put things on sale in cycles. Things like tuna, one local store routinely sells them for .50 a can on a routine cycle. I stock up when that happens. I budget out a couple months in advance. Most the stores in my area also let you sign up for email alerts for sales and specials, you might look into that as well. Every penny helps.
I feel for you man. I really do. I hope things work out.
Chasing 40 - checking in with your ol' grammar coach?! At first, I was trying to remember what the heck you were talking about but then I remembered. LOL.
Warhammer - I only went for Endymion which I got so drunk before the parade began and slept through the whole thing!! By the way, I gave up alcohol for Lent.
Stayfit2008 - I will email you my credentials and I still owe you that logo! Sorry!!!
Revmachine21 - thanks for the gem!
To everyone else, y'all are just incredible. My jaw is still unhinged while I'm thinking, "Who ARE these guys?!?!" I'm very sure that if you were my neighbors, y'all would have slapped, punched, kicked, dragged my ass to the gym and said, "SNAP THE F--K OUT OF IT AND START LIFTING!!"
A million thanks to my awesome brothers!! And for you ladies, a big ol' kiss for you!

hey dude,, I'm in the same boat, I lost my job late last year too,, yes its hard to stay outta "the funk" but staying in shape does keep the mind in a better place. If you let the body go, the mind will go with it. I have a 23 yr old son that also lost his job too and we now train together 5 days a week. Still trying desperately to find a job, but here in Florida there are SOO many people looking, there was a virtual job fare online this week,, under 1000 jobs and 80,000 applicants,, its amazing whats happened to this country in such a short time,,, THANKS FOR THE GREAT LEADERSHIP GEORGE!!! anyway, hang tough, keep working out !! and hopefully things will turn around for ALL of us !!

ramen noodles and protein powder....the best 2 dollar meal ever. LOL, all joking aside, when money gets tight, its what I do. I have been out of work for over a year man, luckily my savings and some consulting work has gotten me by....but on the good side, my spouse is about to get transfered with her company, and part of the deal is they have to higher me into a role making at least what I was making before if they take her....so I am keeping my fingers crossed...
