    Protein shake timing

so my trainer said i should focus on muscle maintenance and the most important time to get more protein in my diet is following our heavy lifting sessions.

i've started doing cardio, usually HIIT, post lifting, to lean out a little after taking some time off. he doesn't feel comfortable giving out nutrition advice, since it's not his area of expertise.

so...should i do a protein shake in between ending lifting and starting cardio?then i'd go home and eat a meal after cleaning myself up, the sweaty mess i am.

i know there is that window of time to get the protein in. would doing 20 min or so of cardio before i took any protein keep me from getting the benefits?

i've never eaten or drank anything other than water during workout time, and the idea of a shake sloshing around makes me a little nauseous already.

    thoughts, opionions? danke!

It's said that 20-40 minutes after working out is a good time to have a shake, then about 2 hours later have a real meal. It helps a bit, especially if you have some dextrose or maltodextrin with your protein, towards replenishing the muscles, but it's not entirely necessary if you are having success already without it.

I lift HEAVY so I can be leaner and stronger... and for the bragging rights. :-D

i'm trying to lose a little fat while sacrificing as little muscle as possible. i don't use protein right now and haven't for a really long time. i did about 1.5 years ago when i started lifting and putting on muscle for the frist time.
