    Arrow Car buffs get in here. Water in spark plug wells.

    Hey guys, I seem to have water in 3 of my 4 spark plug wells and the 4th one has rust in it.

    What is the best way to get the water out of the wells?

    take the spark plugs out, crank the car over ( it won't start obviously ) and let the compression of the cylinder blow the water out


    just don't stand too close because it fires out

    Sounds risky to me.

    I got most of it out with cotton swabs, but there still is a little bit around the base of the plugs.

    get an air compressor and attach a blower nosle on it and blow the water out good and dry the holes out. Try to start it then... What'd you do try and power wash your engine bay or something?

    yes water is going to make your engine run poorly, shake, sputter etc... don't worry too much about it, you need to take the plug wires out and let the water dry.

    The "wells" are just there so the spark plug wires can touch the top of the sparkplugs.. honestly, having water in there should not make a difference as my spark plug grommets (above the well/on valvecover) have been needing replacing for awhile and i have a good inch of oil sitting in each one and it's never caused a problem.

    Well my engine won't crank.
    The battery is fine.
    It just won't turn over.
    It sputters a bit, but won't start.
    So I checked the spark plugs and saw water in the well. So I thought this might be causing it not to start.

    If theres water on the actual spark plugs and inside the wires it's not going to conduct like it's supposed to and needs to dry.

    I think I had the same problem with my dads truck when I took it mud bogging and he told me not to.....I had to leave it parked for like 5 hours and it must of evaporated on its own.

    The water isn't causing you this problem. You said it's not turning over/cranking which means that you could have a possible bad starter/bad battery/bad relays/seized motor ect.

    Make sure the battery connections are good and tight and free of any corrosion. If thats all ok then you should be making sure your battery is ok, have it tested at a shop.

    Once you have made sure the battery is good you should try and manually crank the motor over with a breaker bar, if it turns over great then you don't have a seized motor.

    If that's ok then you should be checking for power at the starter relay and checking to make sure it works properly as well, if all that's ok you should be checking to see if you have 12+ volts at the starter.

    and as far as how to get the water out, just take a blow gun and spray it out.

    I checked the distributor cap, unscrewed it and it wasn't wet or damp.

    I'll check inside the air intake and see if the filter is damp.

    Well, recently it has been running fine, the one day it wouldn't start. I had it towed and when it got to the shop, it started fine. They couldn't find anything wrong with it. One time while it was there, it didn't start, so they looked under the hood, tried again and it started fine.

    They still didn't find anything wrong with it.

    So right now it won't start and it either is that same problem or something got wet from me washing the car.

    There is still a small amount of water in the wells, I plugged the wires back on, tried to start the car, still doesnt turn over.

    It sparks a bit and tries to start, but won't fully turn over.

    Its a ford probe. The water in the plug wells didn't have a tint to it.

    Well, I'm going to have it towed to the shop in the morning, hopefully they will tell me whats wrong.

    I'm gonna go with a bad head gasket. It sounds like you have coolant getting into you head chamber. In the head there are coolant channels that run through it to keep the head cool. Your gasket might have torn in between a chamber and a coolant passage. See if you can get a compression test done to it before you yank it apart.
