Bodybuilders... narcissistic?

I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of hearing people call bodybuilders narcissistic, full or themselves, self obsessed, or that they don't have very good priorities and they won't go far in life.

Why is that people don't consider bodybuilding a sport? Basketball, soccer even 'table hockey' is considered a sport.. so why do people overlook bodybuilding!? Because we don't run around and kick a ball? Or because we don't 'slam dunk'? Well I'm sorry, but when are we ever going to use that in everyday life? But eating and lifting things are PART of everyday life.

Just because someone is into bodybuilding, it doesn't mean they're full of themselves, or love to stare at themselves in the mirror, it means that they like the SPORT of bodybuilding.. The CHALLENGE to eat properly, the THRILL they get while lifting a new weight, the CHANGES they see. Aren't those the properties of every other sport too? Challenge? Thrill? Change? and Competing! Bodybuilders may be competing with other people as to who has a better body, but that's because that's the GOAL of the sport. NOT to run faster than someone, but to have a better body appearance. That doesn't mean that that person is narcissistic, but that they work HARD at their chosen sport.

I think people should take a step back and THINK about things before they speak, because it just makes them look like rude, uneducated and closed minded people.

Not sure who said it but it's quite fitting for this section; "Bodybuilding is not a sport, it's a lifestyle".
The majority of people that speak up against bodybuilding are the exact same people who can't even begin to comprehend the amount of work that goes into bodybuilding, they are the people that could never dream of developing their bodies in the same way that bodybuilders do. Jealousy is one word that springs to mind.

If you weren't vain or narcissistic you would always be like the *** in the corner, never appreciative of yourself. I am happy to be happy with the way I look, if i wasn't i would be the saddest guy in the world with all other problems i have - it's something that wouldn't help with my self esteem, and quite frankley... it's a cliche, but generally they are jealous and would love to look good.

A few days ago in the gym I was talking to someone about bodybuilding and at one point I used the word "athelete" while describing a bodybuilder and they laughed at that...

The majority of people do not consider bodybuilding a sport.

You play baseball.
You play Football.
You play soccer.

We don't "play" bodybuilding. I think were more hardcore.

Well... it's true?

I mean, I love bodybuilding, and I love training myself, but you're a damn liar if you can claim you don't see hundreds of people either on forums like this or in the gym being egotistical dicks. Half the Teen section or more keeps talking about how they're "superior" to other people, how "alpha" they are, etc, etc. You've all seen the guys in the gym strutting around smugly trying to compare their bench press to you

You ever listen to Arnold talking back in the day? He was full of the whole "I'M BETTER THAN EVERYONE" attitude.

Obviously I enjoy weight training / bodybuilding, and I'm also not a huge cocky ****head, and there are plenty of people who train who aren't, but it IS one of the flaws of the bodybuilding / weight training community. A HELL OF A LOT if not MOST people are that way. You're not doing the sport any favors by brushing it's problems and shortcomings under the rug.

Hey... Anybody who says something like that has never seriously tried bodybuilding. I was one-foot-in one-foot-out not that long ago and I was thinking of how much it sucks... Then I started to care. Why not get a good body? A 6-pack by senior year? Why not!? Bench 400 by then as well!? Maybe... Little steps first. Squat 400? Sure, lets go for that goal as well!

Seriously, anybody who thinks BB'ing isn't competitive or great for personality is an idiot or someone who's never tried it. Never truly tried it.

Lots of people are dicks about it, but then again, those aren't the kind of people who are strong, they just look good and do enough JUST to look good. I compete against myself.

They are some of the most in shape people in the world.

I also think there's a huge confusion on what narcissism and goal oriented/confident people are.

Narcissistic people walk around thinking 'oh ya I'm so hott! Look at me! I'm the best! Ya baby I'm perfect just look at me!'

Where as goal orriented/driven/confident people are more like " I know I'm not the best, but I'm going to do everything I can to become the best person I can be! And because of this, I'm going to love myself the whole way and I'll be proud of my accomplishments and when I make my goals etc'

Strong maybe, but not fit or in shape. Seriously, bodybuilders may look like they can run a few hundred miles, but most can't. No endurance at all, hee hee. Determination? Check. They just work on something different.

people outside of the bodybuilding realm don't understand the dedication, focus, and drive it takes day in and day out.

they just think we all look in the mirror 24 hours a day.

Like a sprinter has a stopwatch to improve his/her time, we have a mirror to help focus on and improve our image.
