FDA Declares Form of Vitamin B6 a Drug, Effectively Banning Pyridoxamine from Dietary Supplements

(NaturalNews) The FDA has effectively banned a naturally-occurring form of vitamin B6 called pyridoxamine by declaring it to be a drug, reports the American Association for Health Freedom. Responding to a petition filed by a drug company, the FDA declared pyridoxamine to be "a new drug."

Pyridoxamine occurs naturally in fish, chicken and other foods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B6), putting the FDA in the strange position of banning a substance from dietary supplements even though it is already present in the food supply.

The FDA's war on Mother Nature
It's not the first time the FDA has declared a natural molecule to be a "drug" while attacking nutritional supplements that contain the same molecule. A similar story unfolded with red yeast rice and the lovastatin molecules it contains that lower high cholesterol. The drug companies engaged in biopiracy, ripping off the molecule from red yeast rice to make their now-famous "statin drugs." Once the statin drugs were patented, Big Pharma and the FDA went after red yeast rice, claiming the supplement was "adulterated with pharmaceuticals."

It wasn't really adulterated, of course. It just contained a natural statin-drug-like molecule that the drug companies copied and patented.

It would be like Big Pharma patenting vitamin C, then the FDA claiming that all oranges and lemons were adulterated with drugs because they naturally contain their own vitamin C.

So will this ruling on pyridoxamine affect nutritional supplements? Yes, any supplements containing this form of vitamin B6 can now be declared "adulterated" by the FDA. Have you read the article he posted? It sounds like they're banning it to me. It's one of the three forms of B6.

However, I don't know how you classify something that occurs naturally in foods that we eat on a daily basis as a drug.

The goal, of the FDA in the opinions of many is to cow tow to monetary pressure from pharmaceutical companies to classify most vitamins and minerals as drugs so, people can't get them without a prescription. Don't know how that's possible, but who knows?

That is not the same as "banning vitamin B6".

They are banning PYRIDOXAMINE. Not "vitamin B6". Pyridoxine, which is the most common form used in supplements and as a food additive, is still unregulated and available.

I don't know how you classify one as a drug and not the other. It's a form of B6 that's naturally occurring.

No, they're not banning it or technically making it illegal, but classifying it as a "drug" isn't good.

Anyway the point of doing it is that a drug company wants to market pyridoxmine to treat specifice diseases because of its apparent unique effects. The FDA seems to have acknowledged their request and is going to restrict it. Although the details of all this are unclear. I tried to read the briefings regarding the regulation change, but i can't seem to access the files: http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspubli...DA-2005-P-0259

To defend this act is to say that te use of any natural substance to act as a preventative or cure should also be under this jurisdiction. In addition to that, it proclaims the FDA has authority over raw organic resources in some way (read the FDA directive). Also check out their patent on AIDs research and cancer research. Doing research on the FDA will lead you towards the information you need to understand what's going on.
